maybe I missed it in the books but I'm wondering if you can correct a blurred picture?? I know I can blur them if I want but I have a few pics that are taken a bit blurred and I want to correct them? anyone know??
good to know Alison! Thank you also for the compliment
thank you I hope you find the trigger also! I do think Dakota has some kind of allergy because her eyes get bloodshot but I'm not sure to what
well I took her in today and her lungs sound fine and her throat is fine, ears are good, no temperature. He said if it starts happening quite a bit then get x- rays soooo she still eats good and has alot of energy ( actually she's starting to get quite mellow in house) we will see what happens....
Geesh Sheryl that's terrible that your Kayla has it that bad and only 4! Do you think maybe she gets anxiety attacks like people do?? Dakota isn't too bad and recovers quite quickly but then again she's only 14 months old. She never showed any hint of it in the last fall and winter but..... I thought of the cats for a quick second but she also gets these spells outside. I'll see what the vet says tomorrow and keep you gals posted
Anyone have a dog with these ailments? I noticed in the Spring Dakota started kind of a high pitched wheezing sound when she was panting heavily, it doesn't happen too often but today I was talking to someone and they asked if she had a cold. I didn't think it was that noticeable. I don't think it's kennel cough cause she doesn't cough. She's still eating well and is active. I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow to rule out anything serious (hopefully) Here's a few pics of her from the other day if your interested
Really really sweet Melisa! I love the smiley happy face
I can't believe 8 weeks have past already!! So happy for you that all is going well!
Don't they sell these magazines at Chapters here in Canada anymore Krista??
I really do appreciate all of the pointers I'm her leader Id say 80% of the time but sometimes I feel so guilty if I'm too strict with her and I really don't know where that comes from but yet I know I need to be firm. It's always in the back of my mind that this breed doesn't usually have a long life span. maybe I'm holding on to the memories of my last dog too, I was quite firm with her and when she was dying I had alot of regret, maybe I should of gave her more treats or more attention, but I do know I "raised" a good dog. I have to put those feelings aside and concentrate on raising this one the way she should be. I'm too sensitive
She does know her sits/downs/stays we just have to work on staying put longer
I'm guessing you are giving her what she wants... if she nudges you for affection you touch her, right? Even if it's to push her away. Or you even just look at her or speak to her. All of that is rewarding the pushy, dominant behavior, no matter your intention. Ignoring is one thing but giving her a command... something else to do... might work too. Tell her "lie down" or "on your bed" and then "stay". No other words. She needs direction. She's needs to be taught what the proper behavior is at that time. Just don't let her out or give her affection (of any kind) if it's a time you don't want to. Give her a command, firm, no touching her. She'll eventually learn that's the automatic behavior she's to present when she doesn't know what to do with herself or feels like being pushy.
I'm also guessing you haven't paid much attention to Cesar's work even though we've all suggested it over and over. These answers are right in his books, videos, etc. It takes time and studying and learning to train a dog. You've got the exercise thing down but you have not extablished yourself as the pack leader/boss/dominant figure AT ALL TIMES and until you do you are going to keep having issues with her. She's not going to obey or respect you. It's really that simple. Cesar's #1 rule is to make yourself the pack leader and shows over and over in his videos and explains repeatedly in his books how to do this. You really ought to spend some time studying his methods! I promise it'll help if you do exactly as he teaches.
I can't help but feel attacked by your comments everytime I post about a certain problem I have with Dakota. I have overcome many issues with her and I am proud of her and myself for doing so. I'm not "new" to dog ownership however I am new to this breed and specific problems. I have watched Dog Whisperer many times and agree with most if not all of his methods but I do like to ask other dog owners if they have ever had these issues. Cesar is great but I'm open to other suggestions as well. I have never had an 80 lb. Bernese before so this is all new to me and each month seems to be another obstacle and I'm willing to take any constructive criticism.
I take things to heart so I thank those that tell me things on a more positive note
Hi everyone Can a dog get too much attention and demand it?? Is this an obedience issue that I have to work on? I know Bernese dogs are very needy but Dakota is ridiculous! I walk her or take her down to the park/river almost everyday or play tug etc... but it seems she's always in need of petting or any attention. I can't possibly spend all day doing this. If we don't give her the attention she's demanding she runs to the door and literally bangs it with her paw til of course someone lets her outside. She needs to learn to "settle" right? any tips??? and why do I feel so guilty when I ignore the behaviour?
Thank you Bearyfun (don't know your real name ) Your compliment is so much appreciated!
Thank you Sue and Julia! I've missed being on here too I've been doing alot of work with Dakota and some days are super and other days she's the big crazy puppy!
Hi everyone
Nala is made from recycled rabbit fur, the colors are perfect for a cat (light ivory with dark orange stripes) I remember now why I don't use rabbit fur much, it's sooo soft and the fur is flying everywhere! For more photos you can click on the ebay link. Sorry for the dark pics, I'm going to try adding lighter pictures
:cake: :cake: Happy Birthday to such a big beautiful girl!! I absolutely love the look of this breed I think Dakota needs a friend
Thanks for posting the pictures, she's gorgeous
Thank you very much ladies!
Brenda - you're making me feel guilty - our "baby" is SIX today - and I haven't made a cake  !
Still - we are planning to take her out for lunch tomorrow to her favourite biergarten - on top of a hill, with lovely views.
Can't quite believe that Nounours is six already...........she was born on Friday 13th and her kennel name is actually Hexe (witch) - very appropriate!
Anyway - happy birthday to your beautiful girl
big huggies
Maria
ps will try to remember the camera tomorrow
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Nounours! I hope Dakota lives that long or longer. Would love to see pictures of your girl. I felt quite guilty that I never made a cake for our last dog I was so busy with the daughter and her being so young and Brandy (last dog) growing up together at that time that I never even thought of a cake for Brandy.
Thank you everyone for the Happy Birthdays!!
some more
Hello everyone
Today was Dakota's first birthday. We made a dog carrot cake for her
Here's some pics of her
AWWWWWW he is soo cute!!! and it does look like your big dog really likes him, that's great I'm wondering now what it would be like to have a little dog, I've always had big dogs. maybe someday.................
thank you Krista and Melisa  I'm so impressed with her lately, it seems like the past week or so she's been more obedient than ever before She's been playing nicely without the hyper jumping and being nippy(maybe she finally caught on that all the play stops when she does that) she likes the soccer ball and frisbee, she's starting to really respect my 20 year old daughter and not treating her like a littermate anymore. She's really being a joy to have around everywhere
All these months of training are starting to really make a difference and we are all happy to have a dog again
Thanks Lee Ann I have never seen quite the personalties of a dog before until we got a Berner. She's always doing things that are funny and in her calm moments she lays down with her paws crossed, head held high like she's soo proud of herself. She's very attached me and no matter what's she's doing she always has to be able to see me, touch me, know everything I'm doing. I must say I have never felt so loved before
Congrats to you!!!!
Thanks Cyndee I have heard of breeders selling the remaining pups to pet shops that they didn't sell otherwise. i'm one of those people that if my dog ever accidently had pups ( mine are always spayed though) I would have to know about them anyway throughout their lives even if they were mixed breeds of any kind I would have to know if their healthy, happy and well taken care of. I can tell by your avatar picture that you totally love your adorable little Yorkie
I have to say too that there's 1 thing she is absolutely scared of and that's my Himstedt dolls! She's excellent with children but those dolls really freak her out ( my sister thinks they are really eery too )
