I saw it on the news. There are three dead and seven injured school girls and the killer is dead too. Not all injured may make it though. This is so awful. How on earth can somebody kill little girls? bear_sad  He must have been crazy. Dear American friends, you really live in a frightening world. bear_shocked Stay safe!

Hazelnuts (noisettes) are big in Europe but it's hard to find a walnut much less a peanut. So among the variety packs of Kellogg cereals and Oreos, Twinkies, Skittles, etc... are Snickers bars and Nutter Butter cookies.

??????????????????????????? Bobbie, I'm from Germany, live in Sweden, have been to other European countries. I never noticed a shortage in either walnuts or peanuts. Snickers has been my favourite sweets since I was little and its still available. I just watch myself more these days  bear_tongue Don't know those cookies, but I love peanut cookies with whole/half peanuts. I buys walnuts with shell or without in grocery stores both here and in Germany, peanuts salted or unsalted, with spice crusts or roasted in the shell. We also have peanut rings and other types of snacks and peanut sauce is popular with Thai food.
Hazelnuts can be found everywhere, but almonds are actually even more popular. We also have pecan, macadamia, pistache, brazil nuts and lots of other stuff (sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds etc.) Kellogg's cereals are available in a variety of types, I love the one with honey and almonds and the regular. Not sure about the other brands you name, but they may just have different names here.

Amazing what direction this old thread is taking

Penny, yeast is a fungus, a one-celled tiny thing. Its full of vitamin B and when you make bread you are feeding the little cells with sugar and starch and they produce carbon dioxide gas to raise your bread.  Useful, tasty little buggers bear_thumb Buying it from the butchers? I would expect to buy it from the bakery, but over here we get it in any grocery store.
Yeast infections involve a totally different, albeit related, microbe and I'll shut up now

You must be over the moon Nancy. Congratulations to your "cover girl".

Marcia, you might want to find the thread called "what's for dinner", which is where the marmite discussion started if I remember correctly. It was hilarious.

You are welcome Michelle. Can't wait to see your first crocheted bear. Btw, we have discussed crochet bears before, in the miniature section. You may find a tip or two there and don't be shy to ask.

Acipenser

Michelle, I don't know about any beginners books as I have crocheted since I was 7 or 8 years old (am now 44), but here is an online stitch guide, which has small videos also. http://www.anniesattic.com/crochet/cont … ?type_id=S
I find reading the reader reviews on Amazon is really helpful in deciding which book to buy.
Both Berta and Debi sell supplies and their patterns include some basic crochet instructions. I recommend you start with thicker thread or yarn and get used to the techniques, before attempting minis. My favorite thread for minis is punch thread, an acrylic thread made for punch embroidery. It is brushable and make nice fuzzy bears. It doesn't slip while working with it as some other threds do. Good choices are also crochet cotton, perle cotton and chenille, but anything is possible. Furry threads are generally more difficult to work with as you can't see the stitches well.

Aww, Dilu, thank you for the compliments.   bear_smile  bear_wub

Wow, to me, garage sales are another typically American tradition. We don't do that in Sweden or Germany (my home country). People donate their stuff to charity organizations such as the salvation army or they sell to second hand shops. Both the charity shops and the second hand shops may have nice things at lower prices than new, but very far from your great bargains. I fear, the tax office would knock on our door if we did garage sales. They want a piece of any profit we make, no matter how small  bear_sad

I also highly recommend Deb and Berta's patterns though - I have one or two from each of them.

Marion

Great Marion! I forgot about that one. Its by Edith Molina. She has tons of patterns for sale on ebay and her website, even a book. I haven't tried her patterns, but I'm sure they are good.

Oh and don't just search the ebay auctions. Go for the shops too as many pattern sellers have buy it now.

Acipenser

So sorry. Sending    and magic dust sprinkles.

Acipenser

There are some on ebay from different artists. Debi of Tedsfromthreads has some (see the vendors forum) and Berta of Threadteds.com. I can also recommend http://www.bluebearytreasures.com/

May I humbly tell you that I have been so lucky to have one of my bears on the cover of the latest TBS. It is Suzie, my first sewn anime design. I knew that she was among the pics included with an article on Japanese bearies, but I wasn't sure she had been chosen to be in the mag, not to mention on the cover. I haven't seen the actual mag yet, but a friend is going to send me a copy. This is the first time one of my bears (or anything I have made) is published in a magazine. I am so excited.

Here is Suzie again for you. The cover is shown on the magazine website http://www.teddybearscene.co.uk/magazine/thisissue.asp, albeit very small.
