Awww Jane! Look! Two Bella momma's with puppies at the same time! What a coincidence... These puppies were born on the 25th, when is their birthday?
Poor runt did not make it... I was worried about him from the very start... but all of the rest of the pups are perfectly fine, wriggling, active little things. I think the remaining 8 will do just wonderfully. I am so sad for runt... He passed in my hands, Bella sat there the entire time with her chin on my arm, watching. I think she really knew. She didn't try to take him back, but she ignored all of the other pups for a bit and just sat there watching, then looking up at me, gently licking his little feet and nose from time to time. Anyone who says dogs don't have feelings or don't care... gosh, they are SO wrong. I am glad the rest of the pups are healthy.
Joanne, YES, she really is just skin and bones. When she stands up, we can see all of her ribs, spine, hip bones and shoulder blades. I knew she was skinny when we rescued her, but gosh without that belly it REALLY becomes obvious just how emaciated she has been. She has been eating really well since the puppies were born (nearly 4 cups a day!), I am really hoping that she will put some of those pounds on soon, although she's nursing... Gosh, what a life she must have lived before we got her... I am just so happy that she has a nice warm, safe place to take care of her puppies.
A funny story - I was transitioning her to her crate from the kiddie pool last night (they were about two feet apart), and she was just snoozing away with the pups. I thought 'ok.... uh... how do I do this?' and decided to just start moving babies... surely she would get up and move with them. Well I got them all moved over, including the ones that I had to pop off mom's nipples, she was still out cold. 'Uh, oh...' I thought... now what? I didn't want to frighten her by her waking up and all pups were gone, so I scooped one up to have ready to show her, brought him over, and called her... "Belly... Beeeeelly...." nothing. "BEEEELLYYYYY...." Nope, not even a budge. I tapped her, then I poked her a little, got a little worried, so I gently shook her, calling her name... nothing! Yipes! So I gave her a decent shake and said "BELLY. BELLY." and she snorts and opens her eyes, lifts her head, drool strung from her mouth to the blanket... lol She had completely passed out, exhausted from her long day! I have NEVER seen a dog sleep that deeply!
So anyway, I showed her her pup and showed her where the rest were, and she happily hopped in her crate with babies... I was so sure she was going to wake up when I moved the first one... nope, she was out COLD!
Thank you, everyone!
Cindy, yes I have realized that the dogs that we have adopted from the shelter/rescued end up being the best companions! You are so right that it seems like they know, and really show you how much they appreciate it!
Sue Ann, the spotted one is my favorite, too! He is such a fat little hog too - ALWAYS hungry!
He tries to nurse on ANYTHING that touches him! lol
The firstborn (first pic) is such a squealer! If she doesn't get on a nipple right away and has to push her way in, she cries the whole time as though to say 'Moooomma, they're not letting me in FIRST!!!' hee hee
Bella, our rescued shelter dog, had her puppies yesterday! She had 9 healthy puppies, 5 boys and 4 girls!
A couple of them are MAJOR PORKERS!!
Momma and puppies are all doing well - she is SUCH a good momma and doesn't miss a beat. The runt had some big complications yesterday and I really didn't think he was going to make it, but he DID make it through the night and today he finally started sucking.
Hope you all enjoy the photos!
I think he's a rat...? He is CUTE!
Awwww, this made me chuckle and smile... Thanks!
lol, your zombie bears just crack me up! And your little brown bear is super cute, Heather!
Oh my gosh, he is completely adorable!
Awww, they are SO sweet!
Thank you, Melisa!!
Awww, you guys are making my eyes tear up! Thank you all so much for your kind words. That's what I told my husband - it was a sign that I went in that day and found her! We had to give up our Charlie girl who we rescued from the pound, before we moved here, and I missed her so terribly. This girl looks a lot like her, and I saw the same 'soul' in this sweet girl's eyes... she looked at me the same way Charlie did at the shelter. It was meant to be....
Right now she is sleeping A LOT. lol she likes to lie on the carpet with her back legs stretched out behind her. She gets up a lot and just comes to see where I am, then goes and lies back down. Honestly, she looks miserable. LOL She has that "Ugh, this BELLY..." look in her eyes. Sleepy and weary... I've been researching, and its seems like she is within the last 3 weeks of her pregnancy. I had a dream last night that she had kittens.
Oh yeah, 'Jesse' just wasn't fitting her, so it looks like we are still on the hunt for a name for her... sigh...
3 little beauties, with a touch of trouble! What a great photo
Hello, all! Thank you so much for your kind words We've decided to name her 'Jesse' and of course I will have lots of photos of puppies when they come!
Does anyone here have any knowledge on pregnant mommas and puppy births? I thought I remember seeing someone post about their puppy births on here... I could use a little guidance!
Hello everyone, I just wanted to share our newest family member with you all.
Last week, my neighbor gave me a call and asked me if I minded bringing her to the shelter here on base to retrieve her escapee dogs. Of course I said sure. While I was waiting for her to fill out paperwork, I decided to see what the facilities looked like, and all of the animals. I typically don't like going to look at all of the sad faces but I just had to go take a little peek. They had some cute little puppies and such, but this girl just caught my eye. There she was just standing there, tail wagging, and the biggest smile on her face, watching me through the chain link gate. So I went over to say hi to her, and I saw the biggest belly!! Oh my gosh! I looked at the paperwork on her gate and in big capital letters and underlined - *PREGNANT!!* and then 'picked up - stray' I looked at her smiling face and I saw all the little scars all over her face and head, and the tip of her left ear missing. Then I looked behind her at the bare cement floor... no comfy bed for her aching pregnant belly. Sigh... I fell in love with her. I went back and visited her more during the next week and they said so many people come and look at her and then as soon as they see she is pregnant, nope.
I know, I know, I'm crazy. Everything in the world should have told me to let it go, walk away. But I just couldn't stop thinking about her. I could tell she had a good heart. It took me many days of convincing my husband... and here she is!
I guess we will do our best with her and the puppies, and try to find good homes for them when they come! Anyway, here she is! The newest member of our family!
LOL he is GREAT!!!
You did a fantastic job with his eyes! He looks JUST like the grouchy chihuahua that lives down the street! LOL I say that tongue-in-cheek, because I really think chihuahuas look grouchy when their eyes are like that...
This little bunny makes me smile...
