I and my other half both have Sony e-readers.  We love them.  We often spend weekends away and it means not having to take bulky/heavy books with us.  Also, you can alter the size of the text, so if your eyesight isn't what it used to be, you can make the text larger (a big plus, in my case)!  It is easy to download books and there are loads of free ones (out of copyright) around as well.  They aren't cheap, but I had given up trying to read in bed because of the strain on my eyes.  Probably the best gadget I've bought in years.
