That's what I was thinking.  It's 1/4", so no guessing.

I find that I only trim about 3mm. I handsew  so only need to take the bulk out of the seams. And just incase you are trying to figure out 3mms. 1/4" is 5mms.    3mms is about two lines of mohair in from the edge.

Until now I couldnt understand how one could machine sew without the fabric moving. And as for pining. As someone else already mentioned..... it distorts the fabric pieces.

Hand sewing, I have no need of pinning. I must admit this alligator clips sounds good. bear_thumb

Matilda, you are a very fortunate gal that your hands allow you to handsew...mine do not as I have a lot of tendon problems. Others here have problems with their hands/wrists as well. Or just hate to handsew! I can certainly see it's benefits though!!! Pinning is indeed a chore and can distort the pieces if not done properly! But, some of us just have to find ways to make the best out of machine sewing. I can't wait to get some alligator clips!!!!!

A word on pinning........ when pinning two pieces of fur together: get the pieces lined up, edge to edge, and fur tucked in. Hold the pieces firmly together. Then insert your pin about 1/8" from the edge and perpendicular to the fabric. So, straight down into the fabric... not at an angle toward you... straight through. Then point your pin toward you so it is parallel to the fabric and push back in to the top of the fabric. I found when teaching classes that many students were inserting their pins 1/4" or more down from the edge and inserting their pin at an angle. This will cause the fur to slip and allow little control of keeping the edges lined up.
