Hallo Gaby,

thank you for the nice comment on my Lukas.
I am in the Duesseldorf area (I am a Duesseldorfer originally). I guess, I could write to you in German, right?

Have a wonderful Sunday,

lukas-9.jpglukas-6.jpgHi everybody,

I am in Germany since August and won't be back in the US before the middle of October.

I wanted to introduce you to Lukas. I started working on him when I was still in Florida, continued working on him during my almost 10 hour flight and finished him in Germany. The little guy was born partially in the US, over the Atlantic and in Germany which makes him a real world citizen. lol

He is approx. 5" tall and entirely crocheted without a pattern. I also crocheted his outfit.

Hugs,
Marion

My favourite, actually my only one, is Paloma Picasso. I use it since it came on the market, can 't really remember how long ago, but I guess around 20 years.

I got other fragrances as gifts but never enjoyed them and always ended up with my Paloma Picasso again.

Hi "other" Marion! lol

I used to crochet individual pieces but don't do it any longer for a couple of years. I rather crochet head, body and limbs individually giving each piece its form/shape by either adding or decreasing the number of stitches as I go.

It take a bit experience and a good feeling for proportions to achieve the look you want your bear to have. I never use a pattern. A pattern would not be useful anyhow since I combine yarns/threads and work with them at the same time. Each yarn combination "works" differently and with each other yarn combination used you can only go by the developing shape and not by any number of stitches. This way I can assure that each one of my bears is truly a one-of-a-kind bear. And again, I simply can't see any stitches with the yarns I work with.

I can only encourage everyone with basic knowledge of crocheting to try making a bear from thread that lets you see and count stitches using a pattern. You can still give it your "personal touch".  There are e.g. on yahoo groups where you can become a member and where you can exchange information and also get help. One is the threadanimals group on yahoo, one is the threadartist group on yahoo, but there are probably many more to find.

To see what many talented thread artists can do, either crocheting or felting, you can visit the website of the thread artist guild. It is amazing what can be done by using thread/yarn and a crochet hook.

Here is the link to the website of the thread artist guild: http://www.threadartistguild.com/

I hope, I wasn't too lenghty. In case someone wants to try making a thread bear, I can help in case of questions and I know that there are many others that will be able to provide help and information.

Hi Ali,

you don't need a kit, actually I don't even know of any kit around (but I might be wrong). I know that you can get patterns for minibears online from various sources.

All I do is use the yarn that is available to everybody. It is the yarn that people use to make sweaters, collars, shawls, etc.

l am permanently looking for yarn/threads which I think would make an interesting "fur". I don't use a pattern and I have never tried to keep notes (writing the number stitches down) how I make a bear. Because of the fuzzies you are not able to see stitches anyhow.

Only by starting each bear "from scratch" they get their very own character which makes them one-of-a-kind.

Should you ever want to try to make one and need assistance, here I am. Just ask me your questions and I will try to help.

thank you, Pauline and Ali, for your nice comments on my little Tiffany.

Ali, crocheting is different from knitting. You only use one "needle" (crochet hook) and of course yarn which you work with in tiny stitches/loops to create a "fabric" stitch by stitch.

Several of my bears were born in flashlight Here in Florida the power goes out constantly. In the summer and during the rainy season the power is more off than on and during the hurricane season we sometimes don't have power for more than a week.

Since I could never be that long without working on a bear or its clothing I use these flashlights that you hold in place with a strip that goes around your head and leaves your hands free (like the cave explorers e.g. use). Doesn't look pretty, I would even say rather scary, but worksl And I have them already lined up for 2007, fresh batteries, etc.

A "newborn bear baby" might get the "shock of his life" opening his/her eyes, looking at me for the first time with the light strapped around my head shining directly into his/her face. lol

Hugs,
Marion bear_original
