Hi.  My daughter is travelling to Canada next month with her friend and will be in the Victoria/Vancouver area for about 2 weeks.  She has searched websites, and checked out Frommer's, but is interested in what the "locals" might suggest to do.

They would like to find out about favorite eateries, interesting places to visit that might be otherwise unknown or not found in online searches.  They will have a car, and are going to be staying at some hostels along the way.

A trip to Whistler is definitely in the plans.  Any suggestions or hints on travelling by ferry, must-sees, etc.  I'd appreciate any help that might be offered up.

I went to the same area about 5 years ago, but it was on a cruise, and fairly structured.  I managed to sneak away on a few occasions and found some delightful carved wooden bears that I had shipped back.  I'm sure things have changed, and thought this would be a good place to ask.

Oh! Before going across to the ferry, she MUST search out 'Granville Island', a little spit of land under one of the main bridges.
There are eateries, boutiques and shopping! I loved the tiny shop devoted to just dyes and art supplies.  I wasn't feeling that well the day we went and gazed at most of it through the car window, but know that I could easily spend about 2 days there - it was perhaps 5 or 6 blocks squared? That's my impression from a few years ago.
