As some of you know, I'm getting married Oct. 2nd
It's really no big deal, we've been together for 13 years, so no suprise! LOL
We getting married in Las Vegas, it's a theme wedding. Austin Powers will be marrying us, and everyone is expected to dress the part.
Now, I know not everyone will dress as a hippy, so I want to have 'props' to give them. I have a very nice girl from ebay beading peace sign necklaces I can give to the men, and I want to make daisy, or small sunflower wreaths? for the woman to wear on their head.
The problem is, I've never worked with fake flowers before, I have NO idea how to make a wreath for the heads or anything.
I thought since there are soo many wonderfully creative people on here, I might get some good ideas.
Also, if you have a better idea than wreaths, let me know. I'm soo totally open to anything!
You guys are the best,
I used to work in a floral shop and we would take a thicker whire just strong enough to hold a form, and make it in a circle shape. Twisting it off in the back . Then you take green floral tape and wrap it all around the whire. After that take one flower at a time with about a 3 inch stem and wrap one at a time in to the wire wreath you first made. One right after the other till you meat at the back. You can add long ribbons at the back. Make sure some green leaves get in to the mix. I hope you understand.
Hey, that's what I was going to say! I did NOT work at a floral shop but Jodi's method is pretty much the way I construct my bear headwreaths.
Like Jodi, I take a thickish wire, fit to the head (or an approximate fit since you don't have your models handy!), and usually I work with it open and laying flat, in a line.
Then I take single flowers or, for me, more commonly BUNDLES of flowers in little bunches, and twist them at the base to secure them into a small group. I make as many of these bundles as I think I might need to cover the length of wire.
Then I start with bundle #1 and twist its stem base around the large foundation wire as tightly as possible. Bundle #2 overlays the stem base of bundle#1; bundle #3 overlays the stem base of bundle #2; and so on, so that the ugly wire parts are hidden and all you see is a glorious profusion of flowers and berries and leaves and... whatever.
When I get to the end I check out my work and if it looks like crud, I use floral tape again to wrap the stems, weaving in and out of the flowers I've placed. Those faux florals are pretty sturdy, usually! It's a fiddly job but doesn't take too long and produces a very nice result!
Then I form that long length of floral-covered wire into a circle again and close it at the back... sometimes permanently, and sometimes with a little hook-and-eye kind of closure that you can fashion easily if you've left yourself just a little bit of extra wire.
As Jodi said, ribbons tied at the back are a nice finishing touch! I do that too!
Your wedding sounds really fun, Heather... and so do your theme costume ideas.
Have a great time!
Heather,
I have a quicker method!! Buy thin twiggy garland!! Cut to the length you want and twist the ends around each other. Tuck in a few daisies here and there....you may have to use some good tacky glue like Magna Tack to keep them in place. A few well placed daisies go a long way. Cut long lengths of ribbon and tie in a small bow at the back and let the ribbons float freely. There. You're done!
We did this for the flower girls in my daughters wedding a couple of weeks ago. It's a snap when you buy garland.....what a time saver!
I'll try to post a picture tomorrow of the type of garland I'm talking about.
Warmest bear hugs for a happy stress free wedding,
Aleta
I don't have any more suggestions but your wedding sounds so much fun!!! I hope we can see some photos :photo:
xx Sarah
thanks for the tips guys. I had no idea where to start.
Shelli and Jodi, thanks. Makes perfect sense and if I search on-line that seems to be the way everyone makes it.
Aleta, I would LOVE to see pictures. That does sound easy, and I have LOTS to make. Can I get that twiggy garland at a craft store like micheals? I love the idea. I can't wait to see your pics.
Sarah, sure there will be pictures, and the wedding will be viewable on-line for 3 months. Soo cool.
Thanks again guys,
I know.....finally!!.....a couple of quickly snapped pictures for you Heather.
Yes, the garland can be found at Michael's. That's where I got it......and it was on SALE! I trimmed away some of the bulk with my clippers so I had a look a little more balanced for the heads of wee little girls. Gosh, I wish I had a picture of the girls wearing these. They were just precious!!
Anyway, here you go. Oh, and I just bought a few bunches of yellow silk daisies and glued on the half opened buds with Magna Tac(k).....keeping in mind wee little heads. The fully opened daisies were just too big.
Warmest bear hugs,
Aleta
congrats Heather.hope everything works out well

When my hubby and I were going to get married the first time (don't ask, long story LMAO), I had made all my flowers from fake flowers... I had done my bouquet, my throwing bouquet, 4 bouquets for my bridesmaids, and a head wreath for my flower girls I still have mine and the head wreath but I ended up going with real flowers in the end.... It isn't hard to do any of it (at least not for me). if you can make a bear, you can make bouquet! I did my head wreaths how the gals are describing them (except I used the little ribbon flowers since my flower girl was so tiny)....
Have fun and show pics!!!
Aleta, THANK YOU SOO MUCH!
Those wreaths are great! I can't wait to get started.
You gals have such great ideas, I can't wait put all of them together.
I knew you would have ideas, I just knew it.
Off to micheals I go!!
FYI - I think AC Moore is cheaper for florals! They also have a coupon in their flyer (not sure if you have an ACMoore...) Wish you were in the area, we have a place called the Floral and Craft Warehouse and they have a warehouse full of florals in color order and they have really awesome prices!
Urgh, I wish Kim. Don't have anything like that here, that I know of anyway.
I'm leaving tonight to buy stuff, thanks for looking out for me.
I'll show them when I"m done.
