Hello,

My website is done, YAY!

Now I need a hosting service. Gosh, there are sooo many, and such different price ranges.

Who do you guys use? I know we've talked about this before, but I would like a fresh perspective. I don't know if I want to use yahoo, I've found one that is big enough and Canadian and cheap, but are they good? It's tough to tell.

I've read some real hosting horror stories, yet I don't want to pay tonnes of money either.

Thanks for your imput!

I use yahoo geocities to host the site, you can pay for ad free hosting, and the domain is with  yahoo domains, I have not exoerienced any issues with them over the last 12 months or more.

I use them on the advice of Penny.  Speak to Penny the digital angel.

Thanks for the replies girls.

I guess everyone else's hosting company is a secret! LOL

Guess it's back to the drawing board. I dont want to use yahoo and my web provider doesn't give me enough space.

Thanks to those who replied.

Heather... sorry to be tardy in responding.  I only get to view a few posts at a time lately because my boys are with me this week.  Also, I'm not sure I have much to offer in the way of advice or recommendation, which may be why your replies are few and far between.  Others may feel the same way about their hosting companies.

I use macserve.net and, as the name suggests, they're oriented for the Mac user.  They seem to be oriented to the professional web designer, although, obviously -- since I use them! -- they can host PC derived sites as well.  For those of you -- like me -- who don't really "get" how to design a site using html/javascript/etc., or how to use FTP to upload your site files, and who use a PC and NOT a Mac, it doesn't make much sense, on the surface, for you to go to these folks for your hosting needs.

The reason I ended up at MacServe is that, when I first started out years ago, my friend Andrea designed my website for me... and she is a professional designer and a personal friend of the owner of MacServe, who was almost literally a neighbor of hers when she lived in Texas.  So it just made sense for Andrea to work with someone she knew, and that took the form of me, choosing MacServe to host my website and email accounts.

Once I took over the site design and maintenence myself, I thought I might run into problems, but the program I use (Coffee Cup Visual Site Designer) has a little FTP upload window into which I type the necessary information (which I got from MacServe by saying, "What the heck do I put into these little boxes???") ... and then my program uploads everything for me.  So I get to be a dumdum and MacServe.net stays uninvolved.

Every once in a while I do have a big glitch that needs help and then I just write or call Brian the tech guy/owner.  They are lightning fast to respond and help and even provide explanations of WHY things didn't work as I expected them to.  They've also set up my email accounts FOR me... but I'm not sure whether that's "standard," or whether that's something "special" they did for just for me, because I'm a friend of Andrea's, and they like her, and she brings them business.  I don't know how other hosts handle email setup.  ???

Anyway... I've been enormously pleased with MacServe.net but I do have reservations about recommending them because they are not particularly user-friendly for the non-professional web designer and because their services are oriented around Mac users... many of whom happen to be design professionals, who know their way around web design and uploading procedures.

Not sure this helped any, Heather... but I did want to let you know that I think your question is a good one, and that you're being heard!  I think choosing a web host is one of the most confusing things I've done and one about which I have the least background information and confidence.  Perhaps it's just the case that everyone else here feels the same way.

I know waaaaaay too little about websites to even comment.  My son-in-law set up everything and updated it for me for several years before he got too busy to do it anymore.  He taught me how to update it, and I do that on a monthly basis, but that is the very LITTLE that I know.  I am with Register.com.

I use godaddy.com and I love them. They are pretty cheap and the service has no interruptions (none that I have noticed anyway).
Good luck, I look forward to seeing your website!!
