I'm very nervous and excited because I am going back to college to work on my masters degree. Starting today!I am taking classes as a full time student to renew my teaching certification then hopefully, become certified to teach art. I always loved school--I'd be a profesional student if there was any money in it bear_grin but I am a little nervous about what has changed since I went to school last. I try not to think about this too much, but the first year students there  were not even BORN yet when I was a freshman! It really doesn't seem like it could be that long ago!!! Well, it doesn't and it does, I guess.
I expect I won't be posting  as much here, but I'll probably peek in a bit each day if time allows. Anyway, wish me luck!!

Very best of luck Tami.         I have a TC5 but I choose to stay home with my kids until 3 years ago when I put myself out there as a Substitute Teacher. I have held a 20% position teaching grade 4 for the last two years and I sub almost every day. I prefer to teach Grade Primary-3 but I always wanted to teach Home-Ec(sewing,cooking) or Art. I need to get a permanent position before I can afford to upgrade my licence. Please keep us posted on how the studies are going  bear_original   I know you will make a wonderful Art teacher  bear_smile   bear_wub

Woooh, have fun!!!  I know how weird it is to see a young person, and then they say they were born in year so and so.... makes my blood run a little cold.  But hey, you only live once.  Enjoy the process  bear_thumb  bear_flower

Hi Tami,

I can definitely relate to what you are saying. I am currently in my last semester. WOOHOO and cross your fingers!!! It has taken me 30 years to finish this Bachelor's degree, while working full-time, and each time I went back it was strange. After you are there for a week or two you'll wonder why you were so nervous.

The one advantage you have over the first year students is life experience and remember they are just as nervous as you are.

Best of luck and I am sure you will do just fine and make a wonderful art teacher.

Hugs,

Tami, I returned to school a few years ago to prep for our local nursing program.  When I finished I started the program to retrain in a new career (but ultimatley found it wasn't for me, so I withdrew and started making bears!)  The experience, however, was really fun!  Here I was in my late 30's with two kids, a new husband, and a divorce under my belt -- plus a mortage! -- attending school with 18 year old kids.  But they totally accepted me and even came over to my place for study groups, etc.  I was kinda "mom" to some in a way but they also told me their secrets and let me help with life events (one girl got pregnant unexpectedly and needed to talk.)  You're incredibly social and funny, Tami, so you'll be fine!

Academically, I predict you'll kick a**.  When you have to work to fit it in and pay to make it happen, school becomes even more important than it might have been previously.  I've always been a very good and dedicated student but in my last go-round at college I set the curve in three classes simulataneously simply because it was important for me to do my best and that was a value that had been developed into an "adult" level of "best."  So you'll do a bang-up job, I'm sure.

Did you know I also have a master's in education?  My credential, though, is for elementary school.  We bearmakers have so much more than furry teddy bears in common!  I earned my master's "late" too, starting back to school that time at 27 after several years in the work force and living abroad.  I loved it then, too.

I predict you'll have not only a great, fun time after the initial out-of-place anxiety wears off, but will be an outstanding student as well, and even more, that you'll really, really enjoy yourself.

Let us know how it goes, and best of luck to you, friend!

Thank you all! The first day was fine, especially since I had a drawing class! bear_wub  bear_wub

Shari, I know what you mean about having to get a full time job before you can afford to upgrade your certification. I am going full time this semester so I can renew my K-8 classroom teacher certification, then hopefully get a full time job in order to pay for all the art classes I need for certification in that area!! My husband said by the time we finish paying for my education, we'll have our sons' to pay for!

Gijzette, congratulations to you on being in your last semester!! WHoo HOO!! bear_thumb

Shelli, I had read that on your website, I think. We do seem to have quite a lot in common, beyond teddies. Both of us were stay at home mothers of two boys (who kind of look like they are related), both educators, doll sculptors, etc. You had said in another thread that we are "twin souls" (regarding us both responding to Daphne's movie fame with a quote from Elf) I must say I was very flattered  ! Hope to meet you in person someday!!

Thanks again folks! I'd better get moving with my schoolwork now! But I can't help checking out all the nice new bears posted  every day! bear_laugh
