Woodpecker-on-Feb.2-07.jpgWoodpecker out early . . . he'd just been at the suet basket having breakfast.  AAAAARRRRGGGGGHHHHH!  Couldn't believe the outside when I got up this am . . . the weather is SO wacky right now.  The temp was 35 degrees F and there was an inch of snow everywhere!  It's now almost 1:30 pm my time and the snow is almost all gone . . . temp is 40 degrees.  It was gorgeous while it lasted, but I don't like cold weather.  Looks like 6 more weeks of winter according to that groundhog.  Our backyard. Sue Ann, your yard looks gorgeous and the Downy woodpecker is a treat.  I know you don't like the cold, but it really is quite a pretty picture.

Hi Sue Ann
Yes it is beautiful but, like you , I do not like cold weather anymore! This year here in S. California have been unusually cold and now they said it is going to be on the 80 on Sunday!! Crazy!! Look what happened in Florida, poor people. I am still waiting to hear from some friends. Hope and pray no members of TT or their families and friends have been affected by the Tornados and storms
Thanks for the pictures. Your back yard is beautiful.

Wow Sue Ann!  That is wacky weather.  Here I am, less than 4 hours away from you and I left the house this morning in a light sweater.  We've been outside cutting baseboard trim.

Keep the snow - it looks great in your yard.  Ha!  I'm ready for summer!

I don't like the cold either....however, your yard is spectacular all covered in white!!!! I'd love to see pictures of it in late spring or early summer.  The statuary and hardscaping is you have in place is fabulous.  bear_wub  bear_wub

Hi SueAnn, my family is in west texas and my mom was telling me about it this morning, and by this afternoon all of her snow was gone also. hahahahah
My dad hates the snow.  He will faint next time he comes to Denver I'm sure we will have snow on the ground for the next month. It is just to cold for it to melt.

Actually, I think the bird is a red-bellied woodpecker . . . he's quite a bit larger than our little Downy.  Their (red-bellies) range extends only from the midwest to eastern US, so you've probably not ever seen one, Brenda.  The red heads are a brilliant color - almost iridescent - and very striking (so to speak).   bear_grin

Thanks SueAnn, I love learning new things.  You're right - I've never seen a Red Bellied Woodpecker.  He does look bigger than a Downy, but t's hard to tell how close you were to him.  How big is he?  We have Piliated Woodpeckers and they are amazing.  The first time I saw one, it stopped me dead in my tracks as they look soooo pre-historic.  This one must be quite noisy.

bear_grin Gemma I was thinking the SAME exact thing!!  Looks just like the Narnia movie to me too.
I'll say it again...I can't wait for some snow to finally hit this area! Waking up to white trees and crisp snow air is the best bear_wub

so pretty!  I love all your deciduous trees they look so pretty all dressed up in snow.

I've never seen a woodpecker (except of the woody variety!)  You have so many beautiful birds in the US.

MORE BIRDS!  When it gets cold like this, we have bunches of fowl visitors.  These photos were taken out my sewing machine window . . . I was spending more time getting photos than I was sewing bears.  This is a little downy woodpecker (about 5 3/4" as opposed to a redbellied which is about 8 1/2").  That suet cake was new yesterday . . . the woodies have been hungry!  Brenda, those pileated woodies are gorgeous, but I haven't had one in my back yard yet.  DownyFeb.207.jpg
These are both cardinals who came to the main restaurant out back.
CardinalFeb.2_07.jpgCardinal2Feb.207.jpg
And this is a hungry mourning dove which was feeding at the base of the tree with the suet basket.
Mourning_doveFeb.207.jpg
This is how far away I was when I was taking the pics through the window.  I had to crop everything to get the closeups of the birds.  That is the downy at the suet feeder.

Hope you've enjoyed the little tour of my back woods.  I love doing this.  And thanks much for the compliments!

Gorgeous pictures!!

Wish we got more colourful birds like that in old Blighty!!

With the snow on the ground it did look like Narnia. All you needed was the lampost!!

Thanks for the info, SueAnn.  We get cardinals too, and I love them!  The one bird I have never seen and would be thrilled to see, is a bluebird.  We have annoying, noisy bluejays, but they don't count LOL!

Sue Ann has the prettiest bird pictures! Did any of you see the bluebird photos she posted last year? Just beautiful! That garden looks so enchanting all covered in snow!

We are finally getting some snow worthy of a shovel here in New England! It's heavy wet snow and all stuck to the trees. 4 inches so far and it's still REALLY coming down. Too bad it's dark out... I just know it looks like a winter wonderland out there!

Thanks for sharing your pictures, Sue Ann!

   Indeed!  I've been in temps that cold in Missouri, but I'm hoping we'll give it a miss this year.   bear_rolleyes   Being in the teens and single digits is more than enough cold for me.

Sue Ann I LOVE your photos!!!  bear_wub   I have a soft spot for the woodpeckers too and love to see them come around.  We've also got something large that resembles a woodpecker, but is actually called a flicker.  I've gotten a much closer look several times, as I've rescued at least three that have come down the chimney.   bear_sad  bear_shocked That beak is a bit intimidating!!  But they're ever so lovely and sweet, and were very nice to catch in the towel to take outside.  The starlings give me far more cheek than the flickers!  bear_happy
