My fingertips are so dry they HURT. I don't want to use lotion while I am needle-felting for fear of the ingredients altering the wool fiber. What do you all do?

I don't use anything during the day while in the studio but at night I use a product I swear by. This stuff is GOLD. For me it heals up those thread cuts and finger tips over night.  Neosporin and other over the counter first aid things never did that for me.  I've used it for years and it's awesome (and Natural).

All of the products they make are fantastic. If you love bath products I can't say enough good things...the "On the Other Hand" salt scrubs are my favorite.  I first met the owners at Sugarloaf Craft Fest, they are totally lovely people.

Jennifer,
I totally understand the sore, cracked, dry fingers thing. The wool is pulling all the natural moisture out & the occasional needle stabs don't help nor does the weather. I am not only a needle felter, but also a basket weaver & both can really cause fingers to become dry & even sometimes very deep painful cracks. I swear by a very old thing that I learned about as a small child growing up on a dairy farm...something my Dad used called Bag Balm. It is available in Farm Supply stores as well as most pharmacies & department stores cosmetics departments. I slather it on my hands & fingers at night. You can then put on a pair of cotton gloves or even a pair of cotton socks to keep it on your hands & not all over everything else. Doing this once a week seems to prevent most of the problems, but if you have major sore fingers do it for 2 or 3 nights in a row first.
Just my experience bear_original

neutrogena.jpgI keep my hands completely clean when felting (wash off even lotion)... when I am not felting, I use Neutrogena healing hand cream - Norwegian formula (I'm including a pic - my mom use to use this stuff when I was little and she even used it to remove eye makeup!) This really really heals and you don't need tons of it - doesn't even hurt on chapped, cracked hands!

Oh, guess I should have told you that this is sold in stores like CVS and Riteaid and also in Wal-Mart... can't remember the price range but it is DEFINETELY worth it!

I use the Norwegian Formula too, it's really good stuff. And you're right you only need a drop of it..it's super concentrated stuff.

I find I wash my hands MORE when I felt which doesn't help. I feel like I am a nurse or something. I don't want anything to come in contact with the fibers. I am going to have to get some gloves and try Bag Balm overnight, EVERYnight.

try one of the New Skin products, might also be in the bandaid section...as skin covering....you paint it on your skin and it burns like the dickens for 2 seconds and then when it is dry it is flexable and protects the nerve endings and you don't have pain...helps you heal without gooy hand cream-then

when you go to bed at night slather on the hand cream-one of the top notch ones and cover your hands with latex gloves, unless you have an allergy.  The gloves hold the hand cream there, keep your hands warm and what you can absorb will be absorbed by morning....

Thanks Chrissi, I'm always on the look out for great moisturizers, it is dry as a cracker here in Colorado. I have only been here alittle over 2 yrs and I will never get use to this dry cold!

Run a humidifier and drink more water!
It's incredibly dry here too and I'm constantly drinking water. It really helps hydrate you from the inside out!
But I'll admit I still use moisturizer on my hands. I found an Aveeno brand formula that works great. For a quick fix use your lipbalm on your fingertips and cuticles! Obviously not when you are needlefelting but when you can just let it soak in.

Hi Tami,
The Medicine Man is a great "healing" item. I have occasionally used it on my whole hands if they're really badly dried out..but for everyday lotion check out Pretty Baby's other items.  The night and day cream are fabulous..even for hands.  The night is my favorite, not a heavy scent and very soothing to wear lavender at night.  Their products really are yummy  bear_original (the lip balm rocks!!)

I agree.. I run a humidifier all the time at home (actually, two) I also will use in shower lotion - which REALLY helps!

Really good tip, I think you're right.  When I am not biking (trails too muddy right now) I totally slack on the water. But when I bike I easily drink a gallon a day and more if its hot. Plus the fact we are running the heater constantly. My face even feels like sandpaper!
