Hey Everyone!  Thought I would share several photos of our snow that I took today.  Our front yard and drive is actually one huge snowdrift........almost 7 feet tall at the worst points.  We are so stuck!! bear_sad Our neighbor came by earlier with his tractor, and he couldn't even scoop us out.  Mostly due to the fact he could not safely manuever to move the snow.  I'm not sure what we will do now.  The snow is too deep and packed too hard by the wind (it holds Darren's weight, and he's NOT skinny!) for the snowblower or shovels to be of any use.  A tractor can't get in.  What we need is someone with a tractor that has one of those big snowblowers on it.  But we don't know anyone who has one.........and are currently calling around trying to track someone down.  Hope we can find someone, or else we'll be sitting here until it melts!

Anyway, here's what happens when 16 inches of snow is combined with 40-50 mph winds over a two day period. bear_tongue   My van is just about completely buried and the boys have had a ball this afternoon actually sledding down the huge drift out front. bear_grin

Hi Tami!  It is pretty......if terribly inconvienent! bear_tongue  I do like to stay home, but being forced to is something else. bear_wacko  My dad actually had to drive out with some supplies for us this afternoon (road from town isn't too bad today.....now if we can just get to it bear_grin ).  We met him at the road with one of the kids' sleds to stack the groceries on.  Here I thought we were prepared to this........guess next time I will have to do a bit better!

We are going to try to make some tunnels and caves and things outside tomorrow.  It's to be in the 30's with no wind, so perfect weather to play in the snow!

  Ha ha!!  We keep posting at the same time!!

Two of our doors actually had the snow blown away from them, so we were able to get out.  Thank goodness for that!!  I would have really felt trapped otherwise!! bear_happy

It would be extra scary if you couldn't leave the house. Your boys will always remember this as an adventure though. Do you get snow lkike that in Iowa very often?

No, this is a bit unusual for Iowa.  I guess we haven't had a blizzard like this one for years and years.  Yeah.....I feel so blessed!! bear_tongue  bear_whistle The boys are loving it though! bear_thumb

Thanks for sharing the pictures of your Winter Wonderland which looks very pretty but.......no thanks! Good to know you are all okay though. Not a stranger to that kind of weather as I have lived on Long Island, New York, still don't like it though  bear_grin

Great pictures Tracy!!!!  I grew up in Northern Iowa and now live in the Milwaukee area.  My family members that still live there lost their electricity and ended up in a hotel for several days.  They got 1 inch of ice, snow and high winds, sounds like it was a nasty snow storm.   Good luck, warm weather is coming soon!!!!

Yippeeee!!!  Someone is coming in the morning to get us out!  I am so happy.......and very relieved!  We called I don't know how many people today.....call one person, they give you another person to call and so on.  People were very helpful, even if they couldn't help us themselves.  That is one very nice thing about living in a rural area.....people look out for each other. bear_thumb   Anyway, we finally got a call back from a man who actually lives less than 2 miles from us......and has a payloader (that's HUGE and can move lots of snow!! bear_grin )  He said he shouldn't have any trouble scooping us out.  As soon as we get out tomorrow, we're going into town to my grandma's for Sunday brunch!

Charlotte, I remember that snowstorm you had.  It still sounds horrendous........much worse than what we had this time.  I still think your husband was an angel to scoop out all your neighbors like that.  Lots of work for one man to do!

Christine, that's my minivan buried in the snowdrift!!  It was so funny today, as the boys were standing up there and sledding off the top of it!  They won't get a chance to do that again......I hope! bear_tongue

Lynn, the weather man said tonight that in the ten years he as been here, if this wasn't the worst winter storm he's seen, then it's in the top three.  Wow!!  That's a doozy! bear_shocked  I'm so glad we don't have this often.......I would have to move I think. bear_tongue  I'm glad also your family was able to go to a hotel when they needed a place to be.  Are they back home now?  I'm not sure, but I think there are still people without power in parts of Iowa. bear_sad

Tracy,
I'm glad you found someone to dig you out!  I remember storms like that when we lived in Deep River, Ontario (north up the Ottawa Valley).  You know, snowbanks so high you couldn't see cars in the driveways.  We would have snow from the end of September and sometimes sill have it at the end of April.  By the time the snow was alll gone the black flies were out LOL!.   My hubby went on a fishing trip on our holiday May 24th weekend one year, and had to come home because it started snowing so badly.  God, I don't miss those days!  It's so nice in Newcastle - we have had just a few days of snow and it's so much milder.  I'll stick with where we are, thank you!

                                  hugs,

                                  Brenda

Tracy these photos are amazing and here in Oz we can only imagine!  Hope everyone gets out soon.  I love the photo of the snow frozen as it is blown over the side and is suspended in air, wow!

Jenny and Sam - that is so the truth. But then I think we get it so rarely people just don't know how to deal with it. I don't like driving in the snow very much!!!

Thanks again for the photo's Tracy!!! Amazing !!!  bear_thumb

Wow Tracy, that is amazing, I could imagine it is terribly inconvienant, and we complain about the hot weather but at least we can go outside if we are brave or wait until the weather cools down a little.  Sending big hugs for it to be all over for you soon, can you please send us some rain.

Tracy - Everyone is back in their homes now since their electricity went out.  My parents tried to stay in their house 1 night and when they got up in the morning it was only 50 degrees inside.  Then there was the challenge of trying to get into town due to all of the ice and the snow drifts.  Thank goodness my sister has an SUV, or they would have been stuck in a very cold house.  The ice was so thick on the side of the house that when the wind blew the whole house would crackle.

I'm glad to hear that you are getting plowed out, have fun at your dinner at Gradma's house.

Where are you in Iowa?  I grew up in Charles City.

Lynn
