I've been seeing the little orange icon, above, and references to RSS FEEDS, ATOM, XML, everywhere ... but frankly haven't taken the time to figure out what they are.  If you read newspapers online or frequent blogs you've probably seen them too, and been curious.

Just thought I'd share this little explanation of what a "feed" is, which covers how you can read them, with the TT audience.

Happy learning!

Shelli,
Cool - thanks for the info.  I like it when I know things before my husband, especially on the computer.  He can't figure out how I know as much as I do about computers, even though it's not very much.

Good info Shelli!

When I'm teaching people about rss at work, I tell them that it's the information I need to know, when I'm ready to hear it.

Heaven only knows how much time we can waste on the computer simply catching up with news and information.  I like that with a bloglines account,  I can decide that for this little window of time I have on the computer, I'll catch up with what's new in the card making blogs I follow - By having all those blogs directed into my rss feeder, I simply need to open the reader and open the card making folder - and there are the 15 or so blogs that I follow right there for me.  I don't have to sift through my favourites going to each blog.  And, if there's an idea that I really like, I can just check a little box in the reader that says "keep as new" and that post will stay there until I decide to remove it - no sifting back through archives trying to find something.  And, again if something like a week full of sewing keeps me away from the computer, I don't need to worry that the newspaper has removed the page, or that I can't catch up on the blog etc.

I also love this "rss the oprah way" post over at the back in skinny jeans blog

Aggggh!!! That's all GREEK to me! I feel like I'm living on another planet, reading this thread - or I sould say back in the dinosaur age!  I don't think there are enough hours in the day for me to catch up with modern technology!
(Feeling particularily computer challenged after just finally learning that all the banner ads here on TT are actually direct links to websites! Took me several days to design my own banner, thinking I should support TT with some advertising, and my feeling of pride at my accomplishment was then shattered - I DON"T have a web site! More technology to overcome! - oh well, back to the drawing board!)

Edie, you can have your banner link to your email address, or to a blog; doesn't have to be a website.  If you go with a blog, you can set one up for free.  www.blogger.com has free blogs and it only takes an hour or so to navigate enough to figure out how to post and even include photos of your work.

It's incredibly time consuming to learn all this stuff and for every tidbit I finally manage to understand, twenty more crop up that befuddle the bejeebers out of me, that somebody ELSE already knows how to do!  AARGH!

You'll get there!

OK i read it, but do not totaly understand it

Why would I think that anyone would want automatic updates to my site?

Why would i want the same from them?

And aren't you more likely to have computer problems, worms viruses etc?

Did any of this make sense?

I have seen some blogs, but never " live feeds" because they are so slow and time on the computer so precious that I can not do it all....so

Shelli

in your oppinion

which would be more benificial?  A blog or a website?

Dilu, a blog shouldn't mean any more viruses - usually it's hosted on a remote server.  It's no more vulnerable than anything in this day and age.

And feeds should actually be faster.  For example in bloglines, which is the "news reader" that I use, you receive all your feeds into one place, and they load without all the fancy doodads that may be on the blog, so they load quickly even on dial-up.  Maybe you're thinking of "live feeds" as in the traditional newscasting style?  A feed in techy language is basically the computer language (xtml in the case of rss) that does the background work to present the information to us.  You need a feed reader (also called a news aggregator or news reader) such as bloglines or google reader to interpret the feed.

It's kind of like the way html and the web works.  A page is written in html code - we need a browser like IE or firefox to interpret that code and present it to us in a way that we recognise (and hopefully looks pretty!)

Don't feel bad....I'm sure you're not alone in this feeling.  I have a blog but don't understand all the rest of the jargon that they're talking about either.  I have a few favorite blog sites that I frequent....I just put them in my drop down favorites.  From those sites I hop around on different blog or website links.
