I was grooming my little dog Lucy and I found a lump on her belly.  bear_cry  It scared the life out of me, especially after loosing Holly, Lucy's mum just a year ago. I made an emergency appointment with the vet and thank goodness he feels it is nothing to worry about. I have to keep an eye on it and if it grows fast she will have to have it removed. That turned out much better than I was thinking it would but the vet informed me that Lucy is going blind and has early onset cataracts. Her dad Chunky (my boy) has been blind since he was five years old so the vet feels that it is hereditary. My poor baby girl, she is just like a puppy and charges around playing happily, I hate that this will most likely be taken away from her. I just pray that the cataracts take years to grow and she can enjoy herself for years to come.

Hugs Jane.  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry

Can you get any fresh flax seed from a health food store in the UK?  Get a cheapo coffee grinder just for the flax seed, and fresh grind a little bit and sprinkle that over any wet food for her....or some dogs may even lick it straight from your hand.  The flax will help to reduce the size of the tumor.

Two winters ago, Amanda our coati, began to have her tummy riddled with enormous tumors.  She's way too old to withstand the anesthesia, so we began fresh grinding the flax seed and sprinkling it over her ravioli daily.  The tumors didn't go away completely (but of course she also quit eating the flax....picky child!), BUT it did reduce the size, and knock on wood, she's still with us today.

I will caution, having been a dog groomer in the past, a good vet will not try to remove a tumor until it is imperitive (ie pressing against a vital organ too much, or bleeding openly) because sadly the tumors will often regrow agressively, often larger than the prior tumor.  I don't tell you this to alarm you, just from what I've seen in the past.  Do give the flax a try, it won't harm her...and I even used it to remove  a lump in my own breast.

Sending you a   because I KNOW how important these furbabies are in our lives

Awww, Jane . . . I'm glad the lump isn't a problem - at least for the time being.  I'll be sending good thoughts that the cataracts don't grow fast.  It's so worrisome when our pets are not in A+ health.

Oh Jane, honey, you have had your share for at least 10 years, I pray you are spared from further health woes in your family!  And your pupster IS part of your family.

I figure God wouldn't have created our fur babies if He hadn't expected us to love them and domesticate them and count on them for loving and love.....

thank heavens things turned out all right!

Jane, I hope you lucy has plenty of years left in her.    My dog is now 13 and is having the same sorts of problems. She has the beginnings of cataracts (clearly visible on her eyes) and lumps too. She doesn't see as well as she used to but manages to find her way around just fine. All that matters to me is that she is happy and can eat, poop and run around. I have gotten so much joy from having dogs in my life over the years it was worth all the money I spent on the old girl for all the problems she has had (she is a serial trouble maker when it comes to getting hurt or sick). By the way I also have another little dog called Lucy! Life wouldn't be as nice without them!

Dear Jane: what a hard time you are having. Poor little doggy....You know it is hard to see our beloved pets get sick. But think of all the joy you have had with them and the quality of life you give each other. I hope all turns out well....

Hi Jane, What a scare; glad the vet said it wasn't a problem!  My 7 yr old dog, Rocky, has been blind since he was 6 months old.  He was hit by a car.  He gets around really well, and when people come over, they don't even know he is blind.  The only time he ever has any problems is when I move furniture and forget to tell him, then he runs into it... but only once.  He does still play; his favorite game is to get a toy, throw it in the air, then hunt it. lol  It's really cute to watch him do that.  People are always really surprised when I tell them he's blind.  Maybe not, but I hope that's some comfort for you.

P.S. I was at PetSmart the other day by all the medicated stuff and saw some drops that you put in your dog's eyes that is supposed to slow the spread of cateracts.  Dunno if it works?
