I have a new puppy!  Her name is Daisy Duke (Daisy for short) and she is adorable.  She is a x between a Miniature Doberman and a Pug!  She actually looks like a miniature Boxer.   She is 4 months old and weighs about 3 pounds.

Now the only problem is that after 3 days of having her I started to break out in hives.  So I'm not sure if we will be able to keep her which breaks my heart.  The poor thing has had to endure 3 baths in one week as I was hoping her owners might have had a cat which I'm very allergic to and maybe a bath would help.  Well it didn't so I'm not sure what I will do.

What an absolute doll!!!!! bear_wub I for years thought I was allergic to dogs, I too would itch like crazy when I was around them, but I had a chihuahua when I was growing up and she didn't bother me so I got another chihuahua and it was in the middle of winter so I pee pad trained her and I had no reaction after I bathed her when I brought her home from the breeder, then when it got warm my son took her outside and when she came in I started to have an allergic reaction. I bathed her and nothing happened, no itching. then my son took her out again a few days later and the same thing happened, so I can no longer let her go out, maybe it is the grass you are allergic to. I hope you find a solution, it would be so sad to give up such a sweetheart. bear_sad

What a little cutie, I too am allergic to cats and rabbits, its the dense hair, its funny I grew up with cats and became allergic at 21. I think I am also allergic to dogs that have short dense fur and would you believe faux bear fur??!! but only mild thank god. I hope you can work out why you have had a reaction, her fur does not seem too dense or thick, we have an alsation and it only really bothers me if she has not been groomed for a while, good luck

Jane, I hope you find out,it´s something else, other than this lovely baby, that causes your hives!

What a cute puppy. I think Jodi may be on to something about the outside allergies coming back in with your dog. The other alternative is see a specialist. My uncle was allergic to cats. My aunt loved them. So he went faithfully to get shots so they could have cats in the house. He no longer needs the shots and they have had cats for over 40 years. So maybe an allergist can help.

I wish it would be something outside that was causing my hives however we have another dog who goes in the same back yard and I'm not getting hives from her.

I just can't see myself parting with Daisy as she has the cutest little face.  I'm hoping that I will just get used to her and the hives will eventually go away.  If I touch her with my hands I'm okay its just the rest of my skin that breaks out!! UGH

Jane, what kind of dog is your other dog? Long soft fur compared to Daisy's? I break out in hives to dogs with very short fur.... short haired daschunds for instance. It's that dense, prickly short fur that bothers me. Never found out why so I can't help much here. I worked for someone who kept their daschund at the store during the day and I couldn't resist picking him up and cuddling him! I regreted it every time. I was around that dog a year and the itching never went away.

I agree that an allergist is worth seeking out. I personally wouldn't go to the extreme of allergy shots but I can definitely see how that little girl would be worth it!!! Be careful of bathing her too much... it'll dry out that puppy skin and she'll be itching too! You might also ask the vet what it is about her that could be causing you to itch. See out the professionals... ask some questions... can't hurt... might help!

Our other dog is a x Jack Russell Chihuahua so she has very short hair as well.

I used to break out from my friends boxer and I think Daisy's hair is very similar.

I take her for her shots next week and I'm going to ask the vet about it.  I won't bath her too much as I know it dries their skin and they need the natural oils.

As for shots I used to do them when I was 5 years old 3 times a week for 4 years and I don't really think they helped that much as I still suffer from really bad allergies - the other ugly part of asthma!

I did allergy shots when I was a kid too.... I was allergic to EVERYTHING outside. I had to stay indoors most of my childhood... the shots did little good for me either. I finally outgrew those allergies and developed new ones.

I hope you find something to releive the hives. Have you searched the internet for allergic reactions to pugs or dobies?
