My daughter was visiting with Corson and we were enjoying some time on the big double lounger, in the back yard - it's very comfy. Sarah got up to help Corson with something and I noticed she kept adjusting the back of her sweatpants. I asked her what was wrong and she said it felt weird. After another minute, the look on her face changed dramatically!
She started yelling - "there's something crawling inside my sweatpants" and she immediately started to yank them off - I quickly reminded her she really didn't want to give the entire neighbourhood a show! Sarah raced inside and stripped them off, while still shreiking and poor Corson was really upset. When I came in to see what it was, there was a HUGE freaking bumble bee on the carpet that had fallen out!!!!! Sarah has never been stung and has a real phobia about bees and wasps.
We couldn't believe it didn't sting her because she kept squishing the back of her pants! Sarah wanted to kill it, but I wanted to put it outside. We left Corson in charge of watching where it went (from the safety of outside the screen door) while I got a glass and cardboard to rescue it. I put it on a bush out front and it didn't fly away for over 15 minutes. I told Sarah she had traumatized the poor wee thing!
We came to the conclusion it must have crawled up her pant leg from the bottom. She only felt it when it reached her backside. If it was crawling on the pant material and she annoyed it, maybe it tried to sting the fabric? Who knows, but I have one very happy daughter, who told me "if I had known it was a bumble bee, I would have stripped in the backyard!" She started laughing when she thought about the possibilities - "Wouldn't that have been cute to tell my boss "I'm sorry Steve, I can't come to work today because a bumble bee stung me on the a**! Now we can't stop laughing and Corson is telling EVERYONE - "a bumble bee tried to bite mummy's bum"! Aren't the lazy, hazy days of summer relaxing!

Brenda
LOL, that's funny!
I had a similar experience. When I yanked off my pants a lizard fell out. Then I had to catch it in the bathroom! ICK!!!
eeeeew Jennifer - a lizard! The closest experience I've had is when I was gardening a couple of years ago. I was kneeling and I felt something soft on my leg. I stood up and shook my leg and a mouse fell out. It was walking on the fabric and I could feel the fur against my leg. It gave me a fright!

My sister has a phobia for spiders. I have fond memories of her leaving an outhouse so quickly that she forgot to pull up her pants :)

Oh my gosh! Thank goodness that he left your daughter alone, and how good of you to spare the sweet little guy Brenda!
You KNOW that when Corson goes to school, that's probably the FIRST story he'll decide to tell his teacher/class about his mother! I can practically guarantee it!
My daughter told her class that I kept a jar full of baby heads on my desk. She neglected to mention that they were a 1/2 inch long and made of polymer clay. I'm surprised the teacher didn't call the police!
That lounger looks heavenly! I've never seen a double lounger... must look into that!
Kim Basta
What a down home real and sweet story Brenda! Poor Corson, well, wont he have a story to tell when hes older....Mom stripping in the back yard.......
Thanks for sharing-you tell a great story
hugs

Kim,
That is sooooo cute! "a jar full of babyheads"! Aren't kids super - you never can tell what will come out of their mouths Funny about the lounger - we bought it about three years ago and have never seen another one like it. I could have sold it a few times over. We just got one of those screened patio gazebos and I want to put the lounger IN it, so I can have a nap outside with no stress
Oh, I'm sure the whole town will know by tomorrow. Somehow their old next door neighbour, who's a police officer, heard about it (hazards of a VERY small town) and he left a message teasing Sarah, saying a neighbour had taken a video with his cell phone! Corson is off to his new daycare tomorrow and I'm sure he's tell everyone.

Brenda
Your daughter was a lucky duck not to be stung. Your back yard looks lovely, by the way. I would love to lounge around there on a summer afternoon too.
One time, when I was driving, a bee flew in the car window, down the back of my shirt and stung my back. I quickly pulled over and pulled my shirt off. Luckily no one was around to see. I was also stung by a bumble bee once. It's no different than being stung by a regular bee.
I loved the stories!!!
and that double lounger looks sooooo inviting
Your daughter was a lucky duck not to be stung. .
That'a what I was thinking! I was stung repeatedly by a bunch of bees that went in my shirt when I was pulling weeds. I guess I disturbed a nest or something. They were all over me so fast I didn't know what was happening at first, and when I did I ran into my house pulling my shirt off and screaming as I did. My son and the little boy he was playing with were very disturbed by this.
But it hurt soooo bad. I was so swollen all over too. I
Oooh what a funny story!!! I could imagine relaxing on the lounger and drinking an iced coffee -- oooh where's my invite??

BRENDA !! MEMORIES !!! You will never for get that day. It will be a story that will come up all of your life !!!

Patty and Tami, I had a similar experience but was ridiing my bike when a wasp flew into my tshirt. I slammed on my brakes and stopped my bike so fast, that I ended up impaling my bike handle under my ribcage. I never got stung, but ended in in emergency and was miserable with bruised ribs for over 6 weeks. I had trouble breathing and ended up sleeping on the floor.
I find the sting from both wasps and bees is similar, but when I was stung by a bumble bee last time, the area affected by the venom itched like crazy as it was healing.

Brenda
Brenda it is good that you can laugh about it now, I agree with Kim I bet that is the first story Corson will be telling at school.

I've been stung by wasps, bees, ants, fire ants, etc., but they could all sting me at once and not be as painful as one hornet sting! I've been stung on two different occasions by a hornet and there is nothing to compare with how much it hurts.
Brenda, your story is wonderful!
Bees sting once and lose their stinger. Wasps and yellow jackets can sting repeatedly.
When I was four, a neighborhood kid hammered a stick into a yellow jackets nets underground. The yellow jackets swarmed and we were all stung many times. They were flying in my Shirley Temple-type curls and in my starched petticoats (I know, dating myself here). I remember laying on the sofa later with piles of baking soda paste all over my body.
Sue Ann, your comment about hornets sent me on a quest to learn the difference. I remember being stung by a "hornet" as a child, but just remember it hurt a lot. I knew bumble bees lose their stinger, but didn't know honey bees did as well. I did tell my daughter that if the bumble bee had stung her, it would die as it loses it's stinger and her response was "absolutely it would have died - I'd have stomped that thing with nooooo problem"!
Patty, last summer I was weeding my garden, I was stung by a couple of yellow jackets. Appartently, when I had trimmed back my shrubs in the spring, I had cut out some dead branches in the centre of one shrub and created a perfect, concealed spot for a nest. It took us quite a while to find it, right in the centre where it was well hidden. I must admit, when hubby sprayed it that night and then removed the nest with a broom stick the next day, I did feel some satisfaction!
When our kids were small, a neighbour found an absolutely HUGE wasp nest, the size of a basketball, almost buried in the ground, where all the kids played. They were very lucky that none of them accidently stepped on it!

Brenda

aaahhh bees, spiders, wasps, mice, lizards - I'm actually quite pleased to be in raining (drenched) uk at the mo! Not a bee or wasp in sight There, I've found something positive about having not seen sunshine for a while!
However, I do love the picture of your garden (looks so innocent and peaceful ) - that beautiful bush must have encouraged the bee there in the first place - can't blame it, gorgeous setting.
