Not being 'up' on web sites and ways to get noticed on the internet I was surprised when I Googled a suppliers name into the search bar and lo and behold another supplier came up because they had included the name I was searching for in their key words that the search engine picks up on. Is this down-right cheeky, clever or what? ..I don't know. Couldn't we all do that to direct traffic to our sites?

Is this legal...do others do it?

Seems like another way to bend the rules to me...I am not impressed.

Hi Jenny,
I've never thought about it with web sites, but I  include words in my ebay auctions so I will come up in certain searches (ie vintage, antique).  I'm not sure about the legal aspect of doing it for a website, but I can't see how it can be.  It is a good marketing tool, when you think about it.

                              hugs,

I guess it's a clever but sneaky ploy...but what's to stop me from putting another artists name invisibly on the front page of my website so that people searching for them find me..I think that's what this supplier has done. I'd say that is a bit unethical really..and a devious means of getting customers. I do have key words on my website improve my visibility in the searches but I don't think I would go that far...

Or is all fair in love, war and the internet?

I think all is fair in love, war, and business (including the internet)... unfortunately, from my perspective.  Personally, I wouldn't resort to the tactic you're describing, because it would feel icky to me.

Did you check the supplier's page source (code) to find this information?  I'm not even sure how to find such a thing (I've never looked), although I do use keywords for my own site and know how they're supposed to function.  Depending on which version of my website I'm referencing (because I don't do a terrific job of keeping things the same from version to version), I sometimes include words which relate to awards or honors I've achieved, or positions I've held (like this one at Teddy Talk; I might have "Teddy Talk" in my keywords), so that people searching for those things will pull my results as well as everyone else's.

But that seems like something different than what you're describing, Jenny, because I have a distinct attachment to those concept, and am not just "riding coat tails" which is what I think you're objecting to, if I read you correctly.  It's not like I've put "Jenny Johnson" in my keywords, just to grab a piece of her action!

That's an interesting thought, though...

He-he...it could catch on!!! Yes, I do think it's a case of coat tail riding..and of capturing would be customers of 'x' .com hoping that they will click their link instead of the one they're seeking.

Maybe I am being hyper critical.. but I just think it's a sneaky way to attract customers..

I know with google if you type in Jenny's bears , any website will come up with anything related to Jenny's bears. now on the right hand side another site will also pop up saying Lynette's bears- for this I pay Google a service fee, so everytime some one googles anything to do with bears- my site would automatically appear- exposing my site- I believe it does not cost much.
My son in law did this with his property business- everytime someone googled a local estate agent , their estate agency would pop up so its was sort of piggy backing on someone else's name.
