Some news gleaned from the German teddy magazine Teddybaer und seine Freunde....... Schulte mohair have been taken over by Steiff - I guess that if they had to be taken over, Steiff would be the best!

Hi Maria, I do hope the fabrics don't change in quality I consider Schulte mohair to be the best I've ever used, we need all the yummy fabrics to continue to be made, plus new ones designed for us. We can never have too many kinds of mohair.
Hugs, Jane.
Hi Jane
I certainly can't imagine ANY drop in quality, not with Steiff in charge. Like you, I mostly use Schulte mohair - altho I have to admit, my all-time favourite fabric is the Japanese silk plush!

I really do hate it when things change!!!
I use Schulte mohair all the time so I just hope that with Steiff being in charge, they
don't stop certain mohairs being made available to the public to purchase for our own bear making.
I guess time will tell.

I echo Jane and Marylin's concerns!!! I'll be doing some investigating to learn more about the buy out.
Steiff has been using Schulte mohair forever..... its part of the quality that makes Steiff so collectible! I'm guessing the quality won't go down and hopefully the selection doesn't decrease. The price could though!! Ha!
Its a smart business move for Steiff, to be sure. Only time will tell if they continue to make the mohair available to the public....though I rather hope they do  Being Steiff, I cannot see the quality ever going down on the mohair.
I DO hope the quality changes. I think that the quality of Schulte has gone down in the 10 years I've been making bears. I have some mohair that I bought recently that has about 1/2 the amount of backing threads as older Schulte. It's total crap. I hope Steiff brings the quality back to what it used to be!
I do agree with Alison about some of the backing. I bought a very expensive mohair a little while ago with an extremely long pile and the backing has such a low thread count that it does seem pretty poor and flimsy indeed. It easily distorts too so it has been discarded to the back of my cupboard. You would expect an expensive mohair to have a good backing so I have to admit I was disappointed on this one. Having said that, I have also found this with other manufacturers so they are by no means alone. I find the Schulte to be lovely to work with and there certainly is a wonderful range of styles and colours to choose from, and the quality is usually very good indeed. I guess some you win, some you lose.
My first thought though was that as bearmakers, we are to a certain extent "competitors" to Steiff, so I hope that when they are in control of the manufacturing and distribution of the fabrics, our resources are not suddenly limited!!
