This morning I was at my sewing machine, which sits in front of a huge window, cutting out a new bear. I got really interested in the antics of a silly squirrel trying to get food out of a (supposedly) squirrel-proof bird feeder at the edge of the back yard. Thought I would tell the story in a montage of photos. The pics are definitely less than perfect as I was taking them from inside . . . through a window (really dirty) and screen. Plus, I was several yards away in distance and had to crop/edit to get a close enough photo so that it all made sense. Anyway, hope you enjoy the show.
Squirrel is sunning on top of the feeder.
Hmmmm. I think I detect something good to eat very close by.
Let's see - I'm guessing it might be this way.
Oooooooh, wow, just look at that!! [Arrow points to the open/close mechanism that protects the seed - in open position.]
Now, let me see if I can figure how to get in the door of this fine restaurant. [Squirrel steps on bar that will close seed protector.]
Ooooopsie. This is gonna be harder than I thought. [Weight of squirrel closes seed cover.]
To be continued.
Wonder if I can get in another way. [Arrow shows that restaurant door is closed.]
Humph. No door around on this side. [Bar and seed cover down in closed position.]
Well, no grub from this tub but, hey - what's that I see over yonder? [Bar and cover in open position again.]
I'll just go take a look-see. [Fine restaurants serve a more 'elite' clientele.]
Sheesh . . . I really think I can do better than honeysuckle.
Fine restaurant opens just in time for lunch. [Female cardinal was waiting in a nearby tree for the rascally rodent to realize this was, indeed, a squirrel-proof feeder.]
The End.
Sue Ann,
Thanks so much for that!!! Anything that keeps squirrels out, gets my vote LOL! We have so many and they are so cheeky and annoying AND smart - nice to see one outsmarted
hugs,
Breenda
CUTE!!!!! Thanks for the pics!
Great story and pics Sue Ann. When we were last in Texas we bought a Yankee Flipper and brought it home for my sister. It was the most expensive bird feeder we had ever bought but brought a lot of enjoyment to see squirrels spin around on this thing. Heehee if you haven't seen one before here's a link to it in action on Youtube, doesn't hurt the squirrel but they sure do get dizzy.

I never cease to be entertained by the antics of squirrels.
My mother and stepfather live in a house bordered by woods. There are squirrels all over the place, sometimes. They do a pretty good job of raiding the bird feeders. So much so that Mom and Dad have taken to putting out corn in special feeders just for the squirrels. The theory being, if you satisfy the squirrels with food they like better they'll leave the bird food alone. It works fairly well.
One of the squirrel feeders they have is a little wooden box that has a clear plastic front on it and a flip-up lid on top. You fill it up with yellow corn kernels or peanuts, etc. The idea is that the squirrels have to figure out how to lift the top and "steal" the food out of the feeder. It doesn't take very long for them to figure it out but it is fun to watch, especially when there are two or more squirrels vying for the same goodies.
They are always entertaining to watch.
Loved this story in pics Sue Ann ....did you ever get your bear cut out I wonder, with such a lovely outlook to distract you!
Actually, Lynne, I did. This is the result. It was a new kind of vintage looking fellow. Still have more to do with him, but even with all the distractions in the yard, I did finally finish the bear.
