Hi Everyone!
I'm so sorry for the delay everyone!
Alison, you were correct that we had to do a lot of restructuring at the beginning of the process--unfortunately, this meant we had to adjust the original schedule of announcing the nominees in February.
I can confirm that the nominees will be presented in the August issue (which mails on June 2), and they will be notified via e-mail prior to the mailing of the magazine. Also, once the issue has mailed, we will post the nominees on our website, here on Teddy Talk, and on our Facebook page!
Now that we have a better handle on things and the database/websites are built, next year should go much more smoothly! This was my first year of being fully immersed into the Golden Teddy Awards, and I am thrilled that so many of you are eagerly anticipating the nominee announcements!
Bear hugs!

Have you created a Colorful Critter? The August 2010 issue of Teddy Bear Review will feature a roundup of colorful bears and other critters!
The deadline for submissions (including photos) is this Friday, April 23, so e-mail editor@teddybearreview.com ASAP for a photo identification form!
Also, feel free to pass this on to any of your friends who might be interested!
Note: One-of-a-kind and limited-edition creations must be available for purchase and not already sold out.
Bear hugs!

...Regarding cost of entry fees - I would doubt that the magazine can reduce the fees, but I wonder if they could possibly print photos of some of the other entries rather than just the nominees - even if they were thumbnail pics - that might make people feel like they were at least getting a bit of exposure and appreciation for their entry, and I think the public would really enjoy seeing the other entrants as I am SURE there are a LOT of fabulous entries that just miss out in the judging and someone has put a lot of time and effort into creating them -might help with people feeling disheartened at not winning!
A few of you mentioned this idea of running photos of the entries (not just the nominees) in the magazine. I was actually considering it this year, but I'm worried about the large number of pages it would take up. While it would be valuable exposure, to make it possible the photos would have to be tiny--so tiny that you wouldn't me able to see their details anyway.
One compromise I thought of is to run just the list of entries in the print magazine, and run the list with photos in the digital edition (as well as on the Teddy Bear Review website). What do you think of this? The way it currently stands, the nominees and photos are listed in the magazine along with voting information, and then the winners (with photos) are listed in the magazine and online.
Jessica
... Another thing that I have wondered about is are the entries judged at all anonymously. Meaning the judges don't know who the aritst is when first judging the entries. I don't know if this happens at all in the bear world but I have seen it in other type contests I have entered or seen--sometimes it isn't what the artist has made it is the artists name that gets them an award.
I know many aritsts work is very recognizable so even being judged anonymously most people would probably recognize their work. but I just wondered if this has ever crossed anyone else's mind. I don't get the feeling that this is an issue in the bear world. I probably have just been jaded by seeing it elsewhere...Beth
While we do keep the judging anonymous for obvious reasons, many of the entrants do have easily recognizable work. I hope this hasn't been a problem, but you never can tell with some things.
Jessica
Wow! There are some really great suggestions here. And I must applaud all of you for your ability to discuss and even argue these changes without being offensive to others. That really shows the camaraderie and companionship that takes place is the teddy bear world.
I'll keep an eye on the activity of this discussion until it seems to be slowing down, then I'll speak with the magazine's publisher about it.
Overall, it seems that change is definitely necessary. And I'm sorry that it has gone on this long without asking you, the artists and entrants, what you want to see in the awards system.
And while I can't guarantee anything, a number of you mentioned that the cost to enter is too high. Does everyone feel this way? While the accounting department has a large say in this as well, what kind of price would be more comfortable? (For those of you who don't know, it is currently $50 for the first entry and $35 for each after that). What are other competitions' prices?
Thanks everyone!
Jessica
Hi everyone!
There's been some discussion (found here: http://www.teddy-talk.com/viewtopic.php?id=34511) about a need for changes to future Golden Teddy Award competitions. Most of the suggestions are about adding new categories and changing the existing ones.
This is a spot to put all of your ideas and suggestions. I will keep them all in a Word document and go over them with the magazine's publisher once it looks like the discussion has died down a bit.
So go ahead, tell me what you think!
Jessica
Wow--there are a lot of great ideas here! I will speak with the magazine's publisher about them. Until then, I'm going to follow Edie's advice and start a new thread on this so others can put there ideas into the pot. Don't worry, I've copied/pasted the ideas here into a Word document so they won't be lost. Thanks!
Jessica
Karen and Paula--you both mentioned a need to change the Golden Teddy categories. Should we do away with the dressed/undressed/sizes and instead go for style-based categories? I am very interested to hear what changes should be made. What does everyone else think?
Jessica
Hi all--I know this is kind of late, but the list with photos of the winners is posted at http://teddybearreview.com/articles/gol … wards.html. Enjoy!
Jessica
That's great that he's feeling better! Let's hope his surgeries are over!
On second thought, based on the number of inquiries I've received from people who make partially needle-felted animals and bears, I am going to change the requirement to say the bear or animal must have an obvious portion that is needle-felted. This could include the face, tummy of a sitting bear, paws, etc.
Since this isn't a competition or contest, I'd like to give as many people a chance to be included as possible. Thanks!
Jessica
Hi Susan!
I'm going to go with the Golden Teddy Award rules on this one and say at least 80 percent needs to be needle-felted. Thanks!
Jessica

Awww what a little sweetheart! Does he mind the cast much? One of our dogs had one after he was attacked at the shelter (we adopted him right after the incident). Luckily, it didn't phase him at all! Here he is right after we brought him home:
Playing King of the Snow Pile (with a cast cover made of snowboarding socks :
And two years later, being a Snoopy wannabe on the home-built doghouse:
Shadow is soooo adorable--hope his check up goes/went well!

I know this is quite a bit after the fact, but just to clarify, our website is not written in Flash--our digital editions of the magazine are. We use Zmags to publish and send our digital editions; they are also used by bigger companies such as Volkswagon, John Deere, Toys "R" Us, 3M and Ikea.
While we have never had any safety issues with Flash or Zmags, if this is a concern for some of you, the good-ol' paper edition still exists and will continue to be printed. (Though we're not responsible for any paper cuts you may fall victim to.)

Hi Carolyn and Lisa!
I'm sorry it has taken me so long to respond to your posts! While I am "on" this forum, I really haven't been visiting it like I should. I took over the magazine for Sarah last year, and I have to say I've fallen in love with teddy bears all over again! I collected them as a child, and now I need to get back to it! So with that being said, thank you for supporting the magazine--we appreciate it!
Teddy Bear Review is now on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Teddy-Bea … 080?ref=nf
Log on to facebook.com to become a fan of the magazine and stay up-to-date on breaking TBR news and events!
I wish I could personally call and congratulate all the nominees, but unfortunately I'm swamped with so many other things and just don't have the time (I should be working on the next issue of TBR as I write this! :P). And thanks everyone for being so patient while we worked out the glitches with our online judging system.
       Wow . . . look at all the Teddy Talkers!! Way to go, people! Congratulations to all of you very talented artists - all nominations well deserved. I'm truly so proud of you all. Sarah, I did notice that Kelly Dean (Tableaux category) is listed as Kelly Zwagerman. ??
That was how Kelly was registered. I can change it though. Thanks!
Congratulations to 2009 Golden Teddy Award nominees, and thanks to everyone who entered this year's competition! The judges commented that judging was especially difficult this year because of all the amazing entries—what a difficult task to narrow down more than 250 entries to 82 nominees! If you see any mistakes on the list (misspellings, missing company names, etc.) please contact me at editor@teddybearreview.com. Nominee packets, which include nominee ribbons, will be mailed next week, so watch your mailbox!
The list of nominees will appear in the August issue of Teddy Bear Review. In the October issue, photographs of the nominees will be included along with a mail-in ballot to vote for your favorite creations.
The awards will be presented at the Golden Teddy Awards banquet on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, held in conjunction with the Hunt Valley Christmas/Holiday Show & Sale in Hunt Valley, Md. I hope you will be able to join us for friends, food, and fun, and to congratulate this year’s winners in person. Email editor@teddybearreview.com to register for the banquet (ticket prices TBD).

On another note can someone tell me why magazines go so far in advance?? its only April, but the June magazine is out...why is it called the June edition..why not the April edition?? Im sure theres a valid reason..I just have no clue what it is!!LOL
Kerrilyn
Hi Kerrilyn,
It's a newsstand thing. If June came out in June, we would barely get a month on the newsstand, as they like to pull the magazines off the shelves before the month is over. We have to get two months out of each issue of TBR, since it's published every other month, so the cover dates are two months in advance of the actual month to make sure we get the maximum amount of time on newsstand.
Hi everyone! Our judges are going through the submissions this week, and we'll be tallying the results next week. So we should have a list by the end of the month. Thanks for your patience!
Unfortunately things are still delayed. Our IT department is working on fixing the glitches with the online judging system (aren't computers wonderful?! :P). As soon as that's fixed, our judges can judge all the submissions and we can tally the results. I'm hoping to have the nominee list by the end of April. We will notify the nominees once we know who they are. We'll also post the list on Teddy Talk.
