Thank you all so much for your answers.  I should clarify that I was asking the question about a tote / purse pattern in particular.  I just figured that I could find the answer here.  I don't think I could sell a bear, no matter who's pattern I used.  Might be like selling my kids, which I contemplate, but would never do. bear_original

It does make me wonder though, how much difference does it take to make it "yours".  I mean, I have never followed a recipe in my life...  I always start with the best intentions, but decide it needs more of this and less or none of that. I usually say that this dish or that is based on a recipe, but isn't really that dish.

If someone uses pattern A for the body, but changes the limbs and maybe uses pattern B for the ears, can they turn around and call it an original?  I once saw fairies that someone else had made (almost identical to mine, but with cheaper fabric, different wings and for less $) at a gift shop that I had previously sold my fairies to.  At the time it bummed me out a bit, but I am pretty low key and just figured that's the way the cookie crumbles.

If I purchase a pattern can I sell the products made from it?  Would you list the pattern designer?

Thank you,
Melissa

Hello,

I purchased string mohair to make Gorgonzola http://sissis-baerenladen.shop.t-online … ID%5F65013 the fabric is supposed to be the same, but the mohair I got is so sparse that you can see the yellow through it everywhere, really, REALLY well.  In the photo the fabric looks much fluffier, is there a way to brush out the string mohair to make it fluffy like this?  I don't want to mess with the piece I have until I know what kind of messing to do.

I am looking for mohair (preferably on the long side, not too dense or fluffy) in a tangerine-ish color, like the color of a cremesicle (sp?) the ice cream pops that are orange on the outside and vanilla on the inside.

I am hesitant to trust my monitor color when spending so much money.

Any suggestions would be welcome,
Thanks,
Melissa

Not that i've ever had the free time, but assuming you had no interruptions...

How many hours do you estimate it would take you to finish a medium sized bear of average difficulty?  I tend to get terribly obsessed with the little things when i make fairies and am finding i am equally obsessing the smaller details of my first bear...  I may never finish. LOL

I live about 45 minutes from Reno, Nevada.  I used to live in The Bay Area and loved the fabric shops there.  I mostly did quilting and dolls.  There is the most wonderful Indian fabric shop in Berekely that sells sari material.  One of the things i miss about living in that area...

Traffic, housing prices, two of the things i don't miss.  This area i live in now (I grew up here as well) is really growing, but is still pretty isolated as far as some of the more esoteric fabric shopping goes.  There may be some place in Reno that sells mohair, i'm sure the selection would be limited and the price would be a bit high,  but it is something.

I really like the look of the multi colour bears, i have been looking on eBay thought i might find some smaller pieces.   I've also been checking out the Intercal small cuts list.

I had been looking at both Intercal and Bearycheap.  I sure wish there was someplace local i could buy in person.  I am a very tactile fabric shopper, i really like to touch before i buy.

Thank you all for your advice!  I have one other question.  Since the fabric is directional which makes layout more important, would you buy a fat quarter or a long one?

Thanks again for all your help,
Melissa

I have a pattern on order for an 11" bear, i would like to order fabric as well, but the order form doesn't say how much to purchase.  With the price of mohair being so high, i really don't want to buy more than i need.

How much fabric would an average bear of this size require?

Thanks for any advice,
Melissa
