Little Bear Guy

For steel shot in the tummy I use pantyhose , I buy them at the dollar store and I just cut and knot the one end then fill with the shot and them tie another knot.  With smaller bears I will put stuff in around the joints first and then pour in the shot. I rarely use glass beads as I find them far to messy and I do find they work out through the fabric so I stick to shot.

I am assuming you are talking about the big sculpted clay noses?  If that's the case the artist usually makes the noses to fit each bear. It's a lot of fun and there is some trial and error to them.

That would be my recommendation as well just check some of the doll sites and perhaps they have the answer you are looking for.

Little Bear Guy

I agree Sue,  I just keep working on the head. Sometimes I don't like it at first when it's been stuffed. But I know once I do some sculpting and put the eyes in and that I will like it.  Just stick with it and see how it goes,

Little Bear Guy

Very sweet, love the toes

Little Bear Guy

Hey it happens,  sheesh even with eyesight I can remember when I was first making bears I had a lot of "duh" moments. It all comes with practice, this is how we learn cause once you've done that mistake once you likely won't do it ever again.   I know it's frustrating but it's all about learning.

Wubbie,  this is what is so great about art nothing is ever stupid. If you get an idea then you give it a try, doesn't matter if if other people don't like it.  You aren't going to please everybody with what you make and that's ok. Just try it and have some fun.

Awwww you guys are so lucky.  Michelle is such a fantastic and giving person, did one of her work shops yrs ago and had so much fun and a couple of  "a ha" moments .  Wish I could go I don't get to see her near enough.

Give her a big hug for me.

Wubbie I think a clay nose would be great for someone with no sight. You are working with clay and you can feel the shape and you can set it on the bear face and feel how it feels on the bear.  As for varnishing the nose I have a loop in the back of my nose and once it has been baked I run my artificial sinew through the loop.  I then wrap this around one of the knobs on my kitchen cupboard door. I can then paint the varnish on and just let the nose air dry .  You can also buy a spray matte or gloss varnish  just a couple of light coats with that will also protect the nose.

I wash mohair all the time as well, it does make it nice and fluffy. Should take care of the problem.

Well he puts a smile on your face and that's all that matters.  I think it's a good start, and I like soft bears and bears with texture as well.  Keep going and enjoy , every bear is different and unique that's what makes them each special.

Thanks for getting us the answer, I was hoping it was unintentional for the voting results to be seen.

Little Bear Guy

I sent a message off to Aubrey Everett the Editor to see if she could give me an explanation.  Will let you know if and when I hear something back .

Little Bear Guy

Interesting, I just went to vote but it's so complicated and the set up is a real dogs breakfast that's for sure  bear_grin .
I would have liked it better if they had actually grouped the pictures together for each category rather than just running them down the side.  I got so confused I gave up on trying to vote (sorry nominee's it made my head hurt trying to bounce back and forth.
But funny enough even though I didn't vote I was able to click the button that said "See Results" and see who was winning in each category.  I don't know why they have done this it's pretty silly to me.

Kind of takes the fun out of it all doesn't it, when you know who the winner is ahead of time.

Little Bear Guy

I would do it the way Joanne does it and Janice.  I would just cancel the listing and sell it outside of ebay and they lose out on the commission.

Clare a Metre of mohair should be lots for a bear that size , and likely have some left over.

LOL  Karon to funny.

Well I don't think it's a fiery post you started, but it's a good one. I do like Terry's work as well and he makes lovely bears. I truly don't mean to put him down in anyway , just the prices make you stop and go hmmmmmmmmmmmmm,

Little Bear Guy

Clare I have seen them on ebay usually selling for around 200.00  - 400.00 US or a bit more depending on size. Not sure what has changed in his bears in the last few yrs, but hey if he can get people to buy his patterns at that price then I guess more power to him.   I'm also wondering  if maybe he has priced the patterns that high so people won't actually buy them.  Maybe he found to many people were buying them and then making the bears and selling them. That's a possibility I guess, I am not trying to discredit him in anyway he makes lovely stuff, I just don't see a need for patterns to be that expensive that's all.

As I stated before I won't make any recommendation as to a starting price for this bear/monkey. My advice and recommendation was to seek out someone who has the knowledge and  professional expertise to give an answer to their question. I certainly would not speculate on the value of someone's bear especially if they were in the market for selling it I would leave that up to a professional.

In my previous post I meant to state that it was not really up to the seller to try and come up with a starting point it should be up to a professional if they were interested in an accurate price.

After reading my original post I did notice that my first line could be taken wrong, I meant that it was not up to the poster (ste1982) to come up with the value, I didn't mean you (Us Bears) I'm sorry if it came out that way  bear_whistle

I just don't wont to be responsible for giving someone a dollar amount on their bear and be to low or to high and cost them money if they are looking to sell. That's why I would take it to a professional in the industry for an appraisal .
