Do they still hold it over there in the UK? When we lived there my kids loved it, I used to make toffee apples and we would bake potatoes in their jackets in the hot coals, topped with mushy peas. The kids used to make a Guy Fawkes and take it around and collect money for their fireworks... which was a part of Guy Fawkes night I didn't like... the fireworks. I love to watch them when they are being let off by a professional but it got crazy with kids letting them off any where and throwing bangers. If you are celebrating have fun.
Hi Patsy!
Yes we still have Guy Fawkes Night, although now it seems to start WEEKS before and finish WEEKS after!! It's usually kids messing with them, they're so silly but of course they think they're big and clever.
Anyway, we hope to have a few celebrations later, we'll have tomato soup and hot dogs!! Yum!!
Stay safe everyone!!
Now today fireworks are in the shops and being sold many weeks before the event, bought by young and not so young folks who think it's great to use them for weeks on end disturbing everyone and kicking up one heck of a noise. The fireworks that they sell today are so loud. Last night, although not yet the fifth of November, was extremely noisy. The noise started as soon as it got dark and went on for many hours. I could feel the sound of the explosions as I sat in my lounge last night..yes I'm not nuts, I could actually feel the vibrations caused by the huge explosions.
Today (5th November ) is actually bonfire night so I expect the same all over again. God knows what all this is doing to the wildlife, poor little darlings. I expect a lot of them are litterally scared to death. My dogs were scared stiff last night, I turned up the TV but it made no difference.
The selling of firework to the public should be banned. I'm not saying people should miss out on celebrations but there should only be organised displays. There would be far less people taken to hospitals each year and far less lives ruined because of burns. The govenment should crack down on the sale of fireworks to the public. Then there wouldn't be misuse of fireworks and the horrific injuries. In fact fireworks have just become a vehicle for anti-social behaviour and sadly there are plenty who join in and ruin the spirt of it for everyone.
I no longer enjoy but dred this time of the year for the innocent people who dare not leave their homes at night because of antisocial behaviour from kids with fireworks and it breaks my heart to think of the poor innocent animals out there. I have just found two dead birds in my garden ..no more to say...well maybe
BAN THEM!
Jane.
We set off fireworks in our garden last night with our neighbours there to watch. My neighbour who lives opposite me (we live in flats) made hot dogs and I made hot chocolate. The children absolutely loved it. We will have more fireworks tonight.
We only do this on the Guy Fawkes weekend and DON'T set off fireworks for weeks before hand and afterwards (like most people do!).
Remember remember the 5th of November,
Gunpowder, treason and plot,
I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot!
I love Guy Fawkes night..but the pets hate it. This year we're just having a very few little fireworks and the dogs are staying snuggled up by the fire with the TV up loud to drown the noise.
I have done an oven full of baked potatoes.. and we're having hot-dogs ..and roast chestnuts.
Maybe a bevvy or two to wash it all down!!!
I agree fireworks should be banned though... if only to stop all the idiots mucking about with them every night for weeks on end!!
My little grand-daughters haven't really seen fireworks before so it will be a special one!!
My hubby and I are off to a local organised bonfire and firework display tonight. Only a few minutes walk from our home, so I'm rather looking forward to it.
Last night was VERY noisy all through the night, but you sort of expect that, on the weekend of Bonfire Night, but the noise has been going on for weeks and weeks!!! And will probably continue for weeks!!
When I was little, we had a bonfire in our garden, and fireworks which were literally a few coloured sparks that lasted a minute or so. There was not a lot of noise, nothing shooting in the air, etc, and being so young, my brothers and I really enjoyed them.
Fireworks available in the shops now seem to have got bigger, louder, more dangerous, and yet more easily available to kids. Doesn't make sense to me, but what can we do???
Anyway, hope everyone who is celebrating has a good time.
We use to have it here in aust when I was a kid. I can remember my brother and I building the fire and making Guy Fawke to burn. I remember putting crackers in the old clothing. I remember putting many banger bombs tied together and one night blowing up the neighbours back step. I remember being s@*t scared of some of the little kids who had crackers way before guy fawkes night. Because they would throw them at you.
I was sooooo relieved when they banned the private sale of crackers. I dont think it is celebrated at all any more. At least not in WA. Which isnt a bad thing. I feel sorry for anyone that still has to put up with it .
Lobby your politicians and get the bits that are anti social banned or restricted. Nothing will get done in this world until you kick up a stink.
Hi there
I'm really curious - aren't there restrictions on who can buy fireworks in the UK? In Canada you have to be 18 to buy any fireworks and you have to show proof of age. I assumed it would be the same there, but maybe not.
hugs,
Brenda
Amazing, I had never even heard of Guy Fawkes Day. I just googled it and found out all about it.
I think that they are supposed to be restricted to over 18 years...but ,hey, who cares about that kind of thing in 'dear old blighty'!! There are shops here that just sell'em to anyone who is old enough to hand the money over!
I wish it was banned..though, that said, we had a lovely party last night ..no harm was done..and the babies loved it!!
Renae..it has lost its magic. When I was a child we lived in the country..in a villagey area..the children would go around with a 'Guy' on an old pram collecting ' a penny for the Guy' and all the neighbours built a huge bonfire in a field nearby.. and as kids we would watch out of the bedroom window to see one of the men , a local policeman , go and light it. We all pooled our fireworks and had a great night, ate home-made toffee apples and went home to bangers and mash for supper.
It's not like that these days...and to be honest I am not bothered if I never saw another firework again. It's such a shame that all the nice things we did as children are tarnished by a few idiots.
I hope my grand-children will remember the 5th of November but somehow ..I think it's days are numbered.
