Hi all
I posted a link last week to some magical photos of Knut, the polar bear baby at Berlin Zoo....
well - would you believe some animal rights activists are campaigning to have him put down - as being hand-reared will humanise him, and give him behavioural problems, blah balh balh......he's a zoo animal, for goodness sakes!!!! If you want to check out the story, its on
www.spiegel.com......if you scroll down the initial page there is a section low down on the right, which gives you an English language version, with a link to Knut's story
Ye gods - after last year's furore over the killing of Bruno, the wild brown bear, you'd think the murder of another bear would be the LAST thing Germany wants!

CNN ran a story about this yesterday http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/03 … index.html.
Horrible. Nothing else to say about it but horrible.
He's a cutie. The CNN story seems to point out there are many who disagree with this guy's statement. I think he'll be ok, but how anyone could suggest such a thing is beyond me, especially with polar bears lessening in numbers.
My thoughts exactly - with polar bears increasingly threatened in the wild, surely every one is precious?
I can't imagine that little Knut will be put down - just appalled that anyone could even suggest it

If this guy really wants to save animals maybe someone should point him in the direction of the thousands, Yes I did say THOUSANDS of nectar feeding native birds in Esperance in South West Australia.
Its something that authorities arent taking seriously. Brings me to tears everytime I think of it which is often.
This goes beyond comprehension. What is that silly "animal rights" person thinking?! For goodness sake, put that nut in the middle of the Antarctica and see if he survives. I bet he would love some help to feed and shelter himself rather than be "put down".

The polar bear is being considered for Endangered Species category: due to the shrinking ice mass. Their main food - seals - are not as accessible in the past decade and the polar bears are having to swim beyond their normal endurance levels.
Wendy - what is happening to the birds in the Esperance area ? Is it drought, or loss of habitat??? I know/knew the area well, but I guess things have changed...
And Bobbie - yes - terrible tales of polar bears actually drowning from exhaustion, because they have to swm so far to find their prey.... it is just SO sad

I just saw this little polar bear on the news here in the UK - he is such a cutie!!
The animal 'rights' people are just wasting their time on a case that doesn't need their help. There are plenty of animals out there that do!!
Just to let you know, this story was also on NBC news tonight. What a little cutie he is running all around. This is a world wide story now and so Cutie Knutie has world-wide support.
Maria, I just read that Knut might get a new home in Sweden!! He is just sooo adorable!!!
Hi Jen - I hadn't heard that! I guess there must be any number of zoos who'd love to have the little chap -- at least with all the publicity, there shouldn't be any more talk of putting him to sleep.
Don't you feel slightly envious of the keeper who had the privilege of hand-rearing him - a real live cuddly toy...but thinking of kittens and puppies when their needle-sharp baby teeth come through.....
yikes - I bet he could give a powerful (even if only playful) nip!

At 1:30 am on Fox News network, they had a story on this little guy. I think there is no way they will end his life....To put this animal down would be tragic.
