I feel silly asking (newb!) but I have a pattern that calls for it, but I can't figure out what it is! I've done some searches and found it mentioned, but is it a company name, or a description of curly mohair? Something else?

I believe that "ratinee" is the term that the Aussies and Brits use for curly matted mohair.  Someone correct me if that's not right.

yep it certainly is just a term used for the style of fibre tufts, they are bunched and alot sparser in between, if youd like to go to -

then click on any of the following -Blended, Curly, Metallic, Sparse,
you'll get a better idea of the Fabric and then substitute for your local supplier, also maybe this will help,

it gives you an idea of the pile of Ratinee Curly pile.
