My wonderful daughter Sarah is at university in Coventry (UK). Today there has been an unexploded bomb, from World War 2 found just yards from where she is living. The whole of the town centre has been shut down and people are unable to get back to their homes. Many house etc have been evacuated and police say the city will remain closed through the night as explosives teams attempt to diffuse it. It was described as the biggest drama the city centre has seen since the Blitz. Sarah has not been able to return to where she is living and was stuck as to what to do. I phoned a hotel, which is just outside of the area so now my poor daughter is stuck alone in a hotel with only the Gym clothes that she was wearing. Poor love, she's not had the best day! Still I know she's safe even if she is sleeping in her (as she call them) sweaty gym clothes. Thank heavens I was able to pay for a room for her with my card, as she only had a few pounds with her. I just hope she can get back to her accommodation in the morning as all her uni books etc. that she needs for the day are there. The only thing that I am now concerned about is she does not have her medication with her.
Oh the trials of being a mum!

*************************UPDATE BELOW**************************

Well all is safe, bomb disposal experts were initially called in to deal with the bomb. But, due to the bomb's complexity and the extreme danger facing them, they called in further help from Cambridgeshire.
They carried out a controlled explosion on the bomb at 2.43am this morning (Thursday). Police then lifted the cordon which had been placed around Coventry city centre yesterday. Phew, I'm so pleased that nobody was hurt.
Sarah went to the hotel room that I arranged for her and paranoid me didn't like that she was on the ground floor, so I got her to move to a room on the second floor. At eight o'clock this morning someone used a key and unlocked Sarah's door. Phew, thank heavens she had stood something near to the door and they could'nt push it open. I know it was a risk having put something by the door if there had been a fire but it stopped whoever was trying to enter the room getting in. Sarah got dressed and left straight away. I'm sure I'll be completely gray by the end of the week.

Hugs Jane.  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_cry  bear_wacko  bear_wacko  bear_wacko  bear_wacko  bear_wacko

Well, dear Jane, with what as been on your plate the past two years this is a relief!  I'm so glad Sarah is safe and sound in a hotel- and hopefully the Bomb Squad difuses the thing with no drama and her home will be safe....

The medication thing can be  bit of a sticky thing-perhaps the local hospital?  a one time thing?  Thanks to Hurricane Katrina the Red Cross is supposedly prepared for the most basic of medications in an 'emergency'....but who knows.  I hope to never find out.

Perhaps this is a wakeup call to those of us on meds to have a couple days worth in our purses.....think I will take heed...

Still and all Sarah is safe and you are relieved, in the trying times our world is living through this is a very good thing.

Jane...Oh my goodness!  Thank Heavens she's safe!

That is pretty amazing that a bomb was found from so many years ago.  It makes me wonder what else might be out there.

Someone is watching out for your daughter bear_innocent  bear_innocent  bear_innocent  bear_innocent

Who on earth would have thought that???  bear_shocked   I mean, an unexploded bomb in Coventry?????  Oh my!  I'm just relieved your daughter is safe, and that you were able to get her a hotel room for the night

Could she possibly go to an ER or the nearest hospital/clinic and explain the situation?  I'm sure they could give her some as an emergency ration.

I just hope the bomb squad is able to safely diffuse the bomb

Boy, what a scary situation that is!  So glad Sarah is safe and hope the bomb can be deactivated (or whatever they do to them).  How on earth was it discovered?  I hope you sleep well tonight, Jane.

I hope that Sarah will be able to get her medication.

I live in Coventry...the first we heard of it was tea-time when my daughter wasn't allowed into the salon at 4.30pm. The salon is right across the city by the Cathedral but still she wasn't allowed in. This apparently had been going on since 11.00am when workmen excavating building works in the new theatre plaza came upon this very large bomb..which they did not know whether it was armed or not and they had to get bomb disposal experts from Cambridge as apparently it was a complex type and so could not be disarmed easily..if it needed to be disarmed.

It's a wonder they haven't found more such devices in Coventry as we got such a drubbing during the war and as anyone who has ever visited the city museum and seen photos of pre-war Coventry knows, the city is nothing like it's former self as most of it was destroyed in the war and we were left with piles of rubble were buildings once stood. This is because Luftwaffe were attempting to detroy the factories here, missed, and got the city centre instead, including the cathedral which nows stands in ruins. I imagine that this device may have got buried underneath earth and has lain undisturbed all these years till they started building works.

Everyone was stuck though..my brother-in-law had to leave his van in town and walk home..and my husband was caught up in the mass exodus!

Thank goodness your daughter is OK.  Mum to the rescue with the accommodation.  Hopefully she can return to normal very soon.  Poor old Coventry.  My husband was a very young child in Birmingham during the second world war, and he slept for five years in an Anderson Shelter at the bottom of the garden.  At the end of the war, he found it very difficult to sleep in a bedroom as he had no memories of ever sleeping inside a house!  Thankfully, even though houses nearby were destroyed by constant bombing, his family all made it through.

Thanks Catherine..everyone here is fine...I would never have known about it to be honest if my husband hadn't phoned me hollering down the phone, stuck in a jam trying to get to a football match and couldn't because of road blocks. I don't watch the local news much because normally the most exciting thing that happens round here is that someones pet budgie goes missing ..so I wouldn't have seen it had Steve not phoned..then Lucie phoned me.

Mind you looking at the amount of fluff in my living room today you'd be forgiven for thinking it had GONE OFF in there...I really do need to hoover..if I can find it under the fluff.

What hotel did she stay in Jane..? If someone tried to get into her room you need to tell the police...that's very serious...they may just have mistaken their room but the hotel should do something about it. Was it one of the ones near town?

DebbieD Posts: 3,540

Clever for placing the chair near the door.  I certainly would have been informing the hotel staff, and maybe even the police about that intrusion into your daughter's room.  Its the fact they used a key to be able to get in that bothers me the most.  I've had people in the past jiggle the doorhandle, but because they'd gotten the wrong room, their key didn't work.  This sounds a lot more suscpicious to me.   bear_angry   But then I tend to be suscpicious by nature  bear_rolleyes

So glad the bomb's been safely dealt with.  And thank you for bringing me up to date on the history of Coventry Jenny.  I didn't realize it was one of the towns targeted because of the factories.

Oh my goodness what a scare, glad everything turned out ok, it must have been a bit traumatic for your daughter though at the time.  Yes there must be more of these kind of bombs about that people don't know of and London too!!

Well, alls well......

clever of you to remember in the midst of all to have her block her door.  How scary.  It underscores the facts of life in our world.

So glad your daughter is OK and back in her home and everyone can rest better tonight.  Maybe?

Praying for some peace and relaxation for you and your family.
