We were away for a few days last week, and came back with treats for our grandson as usual. He liked them, but took a real shine to something I bought for myself - a birdbook that features 130 North American birds and also has a digital recording of each bird's song. Corson was enamoured with it - he loves birds. I wouldn't let him take it home Friday night and we were babysitting him Saturday at noon. He sat in the car Saturday morning for half an hour waiting to go to our house LOL!
Hubby and I took him for walk on a nearby conservation trail. He carried the book and pressed the recording for birds that he knew, hoping to get them to call back, and some did. He probably gave a few birds an awful fright, because he likes the sound of the red tailed hawk and kept pressing it
We saw a pair of swans with five babies in the creek, a baltimore oriole, several hawks but the highlight of our walk was a tiny bluish mauve butterfly. We are relatively new to this area and I didn't recognize them - there were lots of them. One flew around me, so I kept perfectly still and it landed on my pants. I put my finger in front of it, and it walked onto it, and of course our grandson wanted it, so he put out his finger and it walked onto his, too. He carried it quite a while, and it flew off and we thought it was gone. Well, the silly thing kept following us and landing on our grandson. He did have a bright red outfit on, but it would fly around him and then land. He was so excited at first and this continued for half of our walk. Then it started hovering around his head and landing on his hair and Corson got a bit nervous so we eventually shooed it away. Unfortunately, we did not bring our camera or our cell phone! A perfect picture opportunity lost! Hubby tried on the way back to coax several other blue butterflies, but they wouldn't come near us. It really was an odd experience.

What a neat story Brenda. It is too bad you didn't have your camera. Strange how things can happen like that....with the butterfly.
Dr. Wayne Dyer tells of a similar experience with a butterfly in his book(and dvd) "Inspiration".
Maybe the butterfly was sent to inspire you.
Judi,
I love Wayne Dyer's books and programs and this little butterfly did actually give me goosebumps! It seemed like it was trying to tell us something. I'm searching to find out what ind of butterfly it was - it was very tiny, about 1 1/4 inches across. The inner wings were blue/violet and the outer wings were soft greyish mauve. It was very delicate and we were able to bring it up in front of our faces to get a great close-up.

Brenda
Could it be one of the hairstreak butterflies? They are small, but varied in their colorations. Here's a link to some of them (there are MANY). Look especially at the Eastern tailed blue.
Hi SueAnn,
I'm not familiar with Hairstreak butterflies, but it certainly looks like the Eastern Tailed Blue one. Such a tiny butterfly but sooo beautiful. Thanks so much for the info!

That is such a lovely story Brenda and how neat that Corson has a love for birds.
Reminds me of the time we were out at the airport travelling overseas when our son Marcel
was about 5 years old.
We were at the bookshop at the airport and I said to our children that they could each choose a book .
Marcel decided he wanted the little book on NZ native birds which he just loved looking at all the
birds in the book.

Hi Carolyn,
Yes, I'm thrilled that Corson loves birds. It was neat to watch him pressing the button for "crow" and listening to the crows answer him. Anything we can do to encourage kids about wildlife and nature is certainly worthwhile.
