bear_shocked  bear_shocked  bear_shocked  bear_shocked  bear_shocked  bear_shocked  bear_shocked  Yikes, wouldn't somebody (outside the Subway) have seen the bear go inside or come out?  And zero customers at the time.  I say what a lucky bear.

SueAnn,
Kitimat is in a rugged part of Northwest BC.  i don't know what the population is, but when we lived in Deep River, the Kentucky Fried Chicken store was located separately on the highway and was a constant target of the black bears.  If this Subway is in a similar setting, It could easily been early morning or late in the evening, with no one around.

Oh my gosh, what amazing footage.  The bear is obviously not a fan of Subway as he didn't seem to fancy eating anything!!!   Wasn't he clever getting in and out the door.  Perhaps he didn't have any vouchers!!!!!

At the risk of appearing to be a complete idiot ........... all of you who live in "bear country" - I'd really love to know -
when a bear wanders in like that , is it advisable to beat a hasty retreat????????? Are they really very dangerous, or is it wisest not to hang around to find out?
We just don't have any"dangerous" beasties around here, unless you count our land-lady's nasty little dog.

Maria,
The rule is ALWAYS RETREAT, but back away slowly - NEVER turn and run .  The girl in the Subway store was lucky,.  Bears are very unpredictable - the one in the video looks small, like a young bear.  Most times they will retreat from a human but every summer there is someone in Ontario attacked or killed by a bear attack.  The first year we lived up north, three teenaged boys from town were killed by one black bear, while they were fishing.  They never did figure out how he managed to kill all of them, but it took them days to find the bodies as the bear had buried them and was using them for food.  He was also moving them around as the searchers were looking for them.  The bear almost attacked one the the police seachers, but his dog warned the officer.  The bear was shot and was autopsied because of his aggresive behaviour and it was found to have a brain tumour.
The town kids often camped over on the Quebec side of the Ottawa river which is very rugged, and invariably would be raided by a bear, who smelled the food cooking.  They were always very careful about making sure they had quick access to the canoes to vacate quickly.  Our kids also wore "bear bells" when camping (bells on velcro that could be attached to clothing) to scare off bears.  It's really about trying to co-exist with nature.

Thanks Brenda
Yes - logically, one would never confront a potentially dangerous animal in any way which could be construed as threatening.  Here in W Europe the closest we'd get to wild bears, other than zoos, is through animal documentaries..........and the Black bears always come over as rather gentle souls - we don't get to hear of attacks.
And the young bear in the video just seems to be a curious youngster........
I would so LOVE to have the opportunity to go "bear watching" - my dearest ambition - and that's just what it would be - DEAR!  I have a pact with a couple of friends - if ever one of us comes into enough money (and we don't have a rich Grannie between us) we are going to do it.........
huggies
Maria
