Emo Bearscertainly in the uk, you pay VAT and then a duty rate on top depending on what the item is classed as - plus a handling fee.

If you are talking about the VAT tax, you should not have to pay it. Some companies charge it and then will refund it. If you contact the company ahead of your purchase they should tell you how they handle it.
If you are talking about customs fees, that all varies according to what you are buying. You can do research and find that information. It took me several weeks to sort stuff out when I was looking.
