Hi all, I'm wanting to try using wood wool in my bears head, having read lots of great help here at Teddy Talk about fillings. My query is roughly how much wood wool would I need to stuff a head of a 15" bear? I have found a UK site that sells (cheaper than from the US for me) 250 gram bags .. I don't want to get loads until I've tested it.
Thanks a lot,
Hugs

I just use it in the nose...to make sewing easier....I used to dampen it but now I don't bother...I just ram quite a lot of small snippings in and stuff very hard!!!!
I don't thing you'd need a huge great bag to do a head...I'd get one bag and you can mix it with poly-fibre for a better shape..and just use the excelsior only in the nose...
Good luck!!!!!
It doesn't take as much as you would think Cathrine to do a head ... I agree with Jenny about mixing in poly fill to help get a better shape head .... Good luck
Thanks Jenny and Patsy,
Do you use anything special for stuffing the wood wool in the nose area? Do I have to cut it up into little pieces when mixing with polyfill for the rest of the head? I can't wait to try it out - thanks for your help,
Hugs

I snip it veeeery tiny for the nose and do tiny bits at a time...Donnas Ultimate stuffing tool is excellent for really screwing it into small spots. I use poly-fibre for the rest of the head...but I know some people snip it roughly and mix with the poly fibre before they stuff..while others do a bit of each as they go..I'd do a bit of each I think...But I have never tried it that way so can't help on that one.
Hi Catherine
I've started using Wood Wool in some of my bear patterns now, usually the ones with the larger muzzles. I have only stuffed the muzzles though and I am pleased with the results. I like how the muzzle feels much firmer and it is good for moulding into the shape you want.
I don't dampen it and I don't snip it, maybe that's because the Wood Wool I purchased is very fine. You will need to work over a large sheet because it goes everywhere I just stuff small pieces at a time and then with a flat headed stuffer I can fill any small gaps with poly. I initially bought a carrier bag full and already I can tell that it's going to last me for ever, you really don't need a lot.
I did recently have a request from an Australian customer though not to use wood wool in an order as the Australian customs will not allow this, it has to be stuffed with man made fillings.
I hope you have fun using it and enjoy the results
