If Jared had made beet-colored bunnies, we could call it, "March of the Borscht..."

Which reminds me...

Julia, fall is fast approaching here in the ol' U S of A.  I think it's high time for a re-post of your fabulous real Russian borscht recipe!  I made it last year according to your instructions and it was incredibly delicious.

For anyone curious to try for themselves, go here for the recipe PLUS step-by-step photos >>> http://www.teddy-talk.com/viewtopic.php?id=5054

Shelli: Shelli, Thank you for the ideas. As sad as it sounds, I try to design a pattern but I really don't know what it will look like until I sew it. Funny really, because I have no clue as to what I'm doing. That is why I posed the question because I truely would love to make a pattern that is in my minds eye. Your ideas plus others who responded helped me think outside the box. That is why I am so happy I found Teddy Talk because this is a wonder place to explore and find new ideas to do just that--think outside the box.

Shelli and everybody.... thank you again for the warm welcome and helpful hints....

Michelle

Actually, Borya is short for Boris. My uncle name is Boris.

Thanks, Julia--this is good to know!

My Scottish Hubs has been known as Boris to all his UK friends since he was 13 because of his height.

They were thinking of Boris Karloff!

I'll think of a new one..Haven't made it for a month already! Maybe we should make vegetarien borsht??  bear_innocent  It's delicious too!

(By the way, you should add your name in the SPELL CHECK dictionary! It is always asks me to correct it  bear_cool  )

Eileen, our first president's name is Boris too. You know, Boris Eltsin.  bear_original  But this name is very rare nowadays..

привет, Julia!

Borsch sounds so good! I would probably make a vegetable version. Really, the beet is different in this soup? I think I am remembering pickled beets, which I am not fond of.  bear_tongue

Do you pronounce Boris like borEES? I think in the West we say BORiss. I would love to hear you say it--or speak any Russian, for that matter! I'm learning a little bit from a CD, and I'm having lots of fun!  bear_laugh

Borscht is one of those things like wurst. It sounds icky and gross, but really once you see what goes in the pot, it ain't that bad. Sometime it might even be good.
I had to check out the Julia's thread. It looks good to me.
Though, I won't be making it as I have a severe allergy to cooking and the kitchen.

bear_original BorEES, eh? bear_ermm  Our friends in the UK pronounce it BAdiss, as of course Karloff did!

 March of the Borscht!!

Helena, aren't you glad you came to us for help in designing bears

Seriously, though--the experts on TT are right. If you've already made a few of other people's patterns, or even looked at them, you're ready to try one of your own.

I couldn't see any mention of it--probably going blind--but Nancy Tilberg's site offers excellent online courses, and this one is on designing your own bear.

I wish I'd taken it . . . less fur would have ended up in the trash bear_sad

Eileen: Yes I called about Nancy number on her web site re: her  design class a few days ago. But I forgot, I was flying to Florida to visit my parents.  So I don't know if she called back or not.   I have no idea how to do a class on the computer. So I called Nancy  to get more information about how that would work. I am looking at all the advice people have given. In reviewing all  the responses, I have a lot of ideas such as editing existing patterns to make different shapes. I like of drawing and sketching than taking the body pieces to get an idea of how it would look.... I love the idea of collecting picture for inspiration. Maybe putting up the "idea board" would be a nice thing. It is all about designing what is in my minds eye. for years I have always wanted to do that. I have a great spring board from all your advice. All of you have been wonderful about sharing ideas. I will get a design from all of this wonderful advice and take a picture to show you.  next I will have to figure out how to get the picture in here for posting .

I have spent several days trying to post a picture of my bear but it keeps telling me it is too big!! I'll keep trying....I'm not very savvy with the computer yet but I read from others they were in my shoes too...

bear_original Michelle,

I've got bear pictures all over the place, stuffed here and there, bursting out of my hard drive.

I've even got a few short video clips I found on the web to remind me of how bears move.

I figure that if bear-gazing was good enough for Richard Steiff, it's good enough for me . . .

A lot of people on TT can see a three dimensional leg in a two dimensional pattern, but I'm still struggling with that. One day (one day) I see myself sitting down at my sewing maching with a pile of old fabric and a notebook, and making up every single bear leg shape I can think of before I pass out.

Then I come to, make a fresh pot of copy, and get to work on arms.

Meanwhile, it's trial and error, cut and snip and turn and resew . . .

Nancy's probably very busy with the upcoming Lemonade Benefit, and a whole mess of webstuff, but she'll get back to you. I took her Business of Bears course to get my thinking in order--that course includes lots of great tutorials on photography, photo editing, first-time websites, all the tech stuff you need to get moving.

Thank you Eileen. Yes it is a trial and error isn't it? I'm so slow in sewing my bears (mainly because I work full time up to 10-12 hrs a day). But, on the weekend I work and work on my bears and have a ball. I just love this but wish with all my heart to make a bear that is my own and is different and fresh...

I, like you, can't see a three dementional bear....I wonder though if there is a computer program out there that if you scan a picture in, can it give a three dementional profile? Well, I should edit that sentence, ....something that the cost is reasonable? Anybody know?

Michelle

p.s. I still am in Florida visiting my parents. Perhaps Nancy has called already.  If not, as you say I know she will get back as soon as she can. I know when you have other responsibilities it is hard... I'll know more once I get back to Minnesota
