Hello Teddy Bear Friends: I like to sew with mink and other types of fur. My father buys mink coats at garage sales for me (in Florida, people move from the north and find out quickly they have no need for a fur coat!). So when I visit him, I come home with mink stoles and coats.  I put them in plastic tubs and card board boxes. I don't want to ruin them. So I wondered if this is and o.k. way to store them? If not, what should I do differently?

Michelle, I was told by the head of the fur traders in my state to never store fur in plastic. I place them in cotton pillow slips, keep them away from heat and then every so often take them out and air them,

Thank you Susan....I hope I didn't ruin them....Though dad did not spend a lot of money on the furs, it would be ashame to not be able to use them....

bear_original Michelle,

I keep my collection in a cold cellar--dehumidified in the summer. They definitely need to breathe!

Thank you Eileen and Susan: I need to get them out of plastic tubs. Luckily I live in Minnesota....My basement is cool down there....

I have a wardrobe where I hang them in cotton bags. They do need to breath so plastic is a no-no.
I also hang insect deterants in the wardrobe, but away from the fur, as any smell will transfur to the furs.
I also like to have satchets of lavender near the fur for this reason  bear_grin
