Many of you have followed my ongoing kitty sagas.  Our dear feral kitty Surrender is NOT doing well.  He's always been a bit raggedy and unkempt but he is a wild-don't-mess-with-me kind of male dude of a cat.  The past couple weeks his eyes have become even more goopy and now he has green gunk seeping from them and can barely see.  He actually ran into us the other day and can't find the food dish unless you put it right under his nose.  He's sleeping A LOT more than usual.  He's not losing weight YET.  We are going to try once again with the trap and take him into the vet...of course the first thing they will do is a feline leukemia test.  Please send him your thoughts and prayers...and us as well...as we have grown very attached to him.  It will break my heart if............ bear_cry   bear_cry   bear_cry

Oh Shantell,  I'm sorry to hear about Surrender - I will say a special prayer for him tonight.  I hope you can get him to the vet, and I hope it's not Feline Leukemia, but it is always a threat, especially to feral cats.  Is there any way you can keep him separated from your other kitties - I'd be worried about him spreading what ever is wrong with him.  I hope it's just a nasty infection.  Please keep us posted.

Shantell,  Here's a few suggestions if you can't get your cat to the vet.  He probably has a very weak immune system just from inadequate living conditions.  This is the same thing we are facing with our mama cat and her kittens.  I bought a bottle of liquid vitamin C and some echinacea capsules.  Open a capsule of echinacea and sprinkle it on some food (regular tuna in water works well to get him started) also add some of the C.  Mix this together and feed it to him.  It should let his immune system begin to fight off his illness.  It has worked very well for our little ones.  If a cat cannot smell, they are very reluctant to eat.  So in the beginning the tuna works well.  Good luck.

Shantell,
Millie's post reminded me of something I used when our cat Bear had an ulcerated eye that wouldn't heal, even after a surgical procedure.  Hubby uses Moducare (an immune booster) and I started opening a capsule and mixing it twice a day with canned food or tuna.  It's more expensive that Vitamin C, but it cleared up his eye in 10 days and we had spent over$1500.00 on vet bills before that and nothing had worked.   You can buy it at a health food store.  Any of these products might bring Surrender some relief.

Thanks Millie and Brenda...I certainly will try those suggestions whether we get him in to the vet or not.  I'm really hoping the feline leukemia things comes back negative because that means
all the other cats have been exposed...especially little Skippy who sleeps with him ALL the time.  They are just the cutest little "married" couple.

Thanks so much for all the kitty prayers...amazing how you can get attached to these little furry creatures, isn't it?

bear_cry Oh no, Shantell!  I hope he'll get better soon for you.  The poor baby. bear_sad  bear_sad  Sending prayers it's not feline leukemia........

Another suggestion you might try if you can't get him in to the vet is amoxicillin drops in some soft cat food....or tuna.  I've found the amoxidrops really work well with infections in the eyes as well as respiratory infections.  You can get it from your vet, and it's really inexpensive as well.  It's actually the same stuff doctors prescribe for kids.......that pink bubblegum stuff.  Only in a kitty dose.....and without the bubblegum flavor.

I agree with Tracy, my dad use to have some stray wild cats that he feed and we could not get them to the vet period!!!
So the dr. gave us some amoxicillin drops to put in their food and it cleared the eyes right up!!!
Good luck and I hope he gets better!

Dear Shantell: It is heartbreaking news for you beloved kitty.. . I agree with Tracy, If you can't catch the cat, perhaps your vet can help with antibiotics. Or maybe call your local ASPCA. They may have ideas to help him.....many prayers for you and your kitty. St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint for animals....he will watch over him...

Oh Shantell I feel for you and poor Surrender....best thing to do would be to trap him like you said and get him in....to me it sounds more like an upper resperatory infection than feline luke, but I am not a vet ....antibiotics work great for this, but since he is a feral he may need to get the mother load injection while at the vets...please keep us posted on how he is doing!!!!

Hugs,
Krista

Shantell,
I'm really sorry to hear about your kitty  bear_sad
It's frightening when you don't know what is wrong with them.  I agree with Michelle that calling the ASPCA for advice on loding him into the crate would be a good idea.
Being a cat person, I have 4 myself, all pains in the butts and all strays, I went out and purchaces a book called "The Cornell Book of Cats"  It's been writted by the faculty of the Cornell Feline Health Center at Cronell University.  It covers every inch of the cats body fron nose to tail and life span from kittenhood to old age, including emercency care and a great cross reference of illnesses and treatments.
The book is a bit expencive ( around $35-$45 ) but I've referred to it many timesand found it worth every penny.!.  I'm sure you could also find it in you library.
Anyone who has cats should have this book!  Sometimes it gets a little 'medical' in description but I've found it most helpful.
I do hope you kitty is alright, please keep us posted!
I will     for him and you.

I do hope it's nothing more serious than conjunctivitis.  I'll keep my fingers crossed and say a bushel of kitty prayers.  After all, Surrender is Max's papa.   bear_original

I would like to thank everyone for all their kitty prayers!!   Although the outcome wasn't entirely positive, it could have been MUCH worse.

Surrender finally made it to the vet this morning and he was a trooper.  He barely cried in the car and really only when we moved him...other than that he was pretty quiet with just little meows.

His feline leukemia test was NEGATIVE.... YAY!!!   BUT, his feline hiv was positive.  It is NOT necessary to euthanize a cat who has feline hiv.  In fact, very much the opposite.  So as I type he is being vaccinated for everything else, being neutered, having his owies treated and will be home tomorrow.  We will continue to love him and give him some special treats to help keep his immune system as strong as possible.

Aleta...there is less than a 2% chance that he has infected any of the cats...including Skippy and the kittens.   bear_thumb

He will most likely live to be an wise old cat.  Odds are he will become a bit more friendly...maybe even allowing us to touch him at some point.  Having him neutered was the best course of action to prevent him spreading this to any other cats...typically it is spread through open wounds and BITES and more dominate in males cats that have not be neutered.

So although I would have preferred both tests to be negative, I'm happy it the lesser of two evils.

Hugs and thank you again...it's time for a little meltdown.

Somehow I missed this thread previously Shantell. I'm sorry about Surrender's illness but I'm glad it's not any worse. He couldn't have any better Mom to take care of him and give him his best shot at living to a ripe old age in health and comfort.
big hugs to you both.

bear_cry  What a HUGE relief!  I know it wasn't entirely out of the woods, but as you say, the lesser of two evils.  And what a bonus to get him neutered atop all the vaccines.  I have to admit, with Mister I was relieved to get him neutered because he was starting to do all the silly jaunts off to get into fights.  Now he only fights if someone else comes into his territory.

Sending you a huge bar of virtual chocolate and a mug of your favorite warm drink  bear_thumb
