Here's what i learned, and if anyone knows more please let us all know

Sony created a chip that was crucial to the digital camera to work.  it is a CCD something or other. And Sony sold it to lots of other manufavturers.

When this part of the camera started failing a class action law suit was started.  Sony lost and we won.

BUT

Sony doesn't have to tell you that there is this ticking time bomb in your camera.

Your own company doesn't have to tell you either

There is a period of time and the opportunity to get your camera fixed ends in early 2007.

You would know you have the problem if your camera stats showing you magenta and purples and greens in the view finder,  colors that shouldn't be there.

then you have serious fade out

and then you get lines through your digital image and it makes the piccys look like something from a modern art exhibit.

I just got my camera back.  Sony paid for shipping there and back and paid for the fix.

This is interesting; The place Rick sent the camera is in Texas; all the execs are on this side of the border, but all the work goes on on the other side of the border, but you wouldn't know it by the base charge to fix a camera....$250+. just to take the back off it and look see whats going on.

We were lucky because they had to pay all of it due to the Class Action Suit.  First time I ever got anything out of a class action suit, other than a check for 35 cents....

If anyone needs to know the web site contact me, Rick did hours of research and we can share the sites with you so you can find out if your camera should get fixed too.

Hi Dilu..thanks for that info..my sony is about 4 years old, so far no problems, fingers crossed..

Is there any particular time at which these cameras with the problem were made??

My sister in law works at Sony and I bought it through her, she is the warranty manager in Sydney, Australia...so hopefully I won't have trouble getting it fixed if something goes wrong..

Dilu, I would like the info.  I just bought an older Sony digital camera on Ebay so who knows what I may find when it arrives.  Can I ask what Sony camera you have.

Jody, i just sent you the two main sites Rick researched.  They list a whole long list of other digital camera manufacturers ....

I have a Sony  Cyber-shot DSC-F717  it was top of the line on '04 when he bought it.  Couldn't afford it now.

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/av … _homepage/

http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

It is rather surprising how many cameras have been involved.....I hope if anyone else has the same problems they get the info quiickly and get their camera fixed.

I had real problems with the old camera.  Our needs for e-bay etc are truly different than for plain old piccys of the grand kids.....

good luck
