Is it worth buying?
How many pages is it?
And it says it comes with a unique design tool... what does this "tool" allow you to do?

For anyone unfamiliar about it, you can read about it here: http://onemorebear.homestead.com/Design_A_Bear.html

Just checking this site out , never heard of this artist or seen the pattern.

Yet I am always one for wanting to try something out. Sometimes you get something that is a real must have and sometimes you can purchase something that is just plain rubbish.

If you are new to bear making, then  you can always try these things and start experimenting. I was never one who could sit down, draw a pattern and sew away. Over time, I then started to experiment with shapes , sizes, and would then sit with paper and pen and put them all together till i got what I wanted.

I think this is why we keep at it, as you are always coming up with something new and exciting, and it is what IF i make a bigger snout area, or if I bend the arms a bit more and so on and on.

In my bear making, a normal tape measure is my friend, and then nose template stencils I purchased from Australia, are a bonus. I also find alot of my quilting notions are put to good use.

Hi there,

I have never used this kit,  I have used a great book by Jennifer Laing when we were first starting out plus we also took a course from her on designing your own teddy bears.  Teddy Bear Art by Jennifer Laing.  It's available at Amazon.ca but they are asking 83.00 for it  bear_grin   I have sent the seller off an email asking them what they were smoking   cause it's a used book and even new it would never even come close to being that much.  I know you can get the book at other places.  It is a great book and very easy to follow.  I'm sure other people can tell you about some other books that would be good as well.

big hugs and good luck

Haaaaa  I normally say they are smoking their tackies ( that is what us South Africans call their trainers)

bear_grin   good one Lynette.

I must agree that those nose templates are perfect for bear making, not sure where we would be without them.  They are worth their  weight in gold, they are a must have for any bear artist starting out.  I can't remember where I purchased mine from though,  I think it was Gerry's.

Yes its Gerry's. They have 4 different designs in a pac, with about 6 different sizes on each template. Also the templates are made from a firm plastic, so they hold their shape.

I have used this when I first started to design patterns. It is very good and really explains how to calculate the proportions, etc. I don't remember everything that was in it, but I do remember it had template plastic and a very good book. I also took one of Jennifer's courses and it was great too.
Sonya

PS By the way, Cindy has been a bear artist for MANY years. probably about 20

You know Sonya, I think I have that kit somewhere haha.  The more I look at it the more familiar it looks to me, but that's what happends when you keep buying stuff when you are first starting out.  We have more books and tools then we will ever use.

hugs

i took  a class from Cindy Anshcutz many moons ago..yes she has been  a bear maker for many years! the kits is good in that it gives you templates to understand the proportions of making an adult bear versus a baby bear,,the special tool is (i believe ) a piece of wire to bend and measure your gusset length..) you bend it around your head pattern and then know how long your gusset should be,,and there are several opyions for different heads and stuff i think..  Cindy is probably best know for "gulliver " the traveling bear that Stieff later produced..she has an illness (ms) that prevents her from being active all the time..deb

I too used Jennifer Laing's book, as well as taking a course with her a few years back.  I also had a book by an English artist named Vanessa Littleboy which, like Jennifer's book is great at 'smacking you in the face' with how to get the proportions right...........something that does NOT come naturally to me bear_grin

Shane: $83.00 for the book!  I'd ask them the same question, what a weirdo!  I thinK I only paid about $20.00 for it originally and that's Canadian $.....which works out to about $5.00 US
