Just when my auction was getting near finishing (it was a 7 day auction) with 80 plus watchers someone stole my identity and my password and eBay pulled my auction...

Somebody tell me why..I feel like throwing the computer at the wall...

Awwwwwww.......... THAT totally stinks.  I'm so sorry to hear it.  Nothing like an extra hassle to muck up your time, AND having to wait longer than anticipated to get paid.

I wish I could tell you why this happened but of course I can't.

Hang in and remember that your watchers WILL follow your relist.  Just a few words about stolen identities and eBay doing the yanking is all it will take to get you right back where you started from.

Having had my auction heisted a couple of weeks ago I know totally how you feel.....even thought we're not quite in the same league  bear_tongue Post a note about it as many places as you can...as Shelli said, people will realise it's nothing to do with you and will bid again.

The thing that is really annoying is that they have changed (understandably) all my passwords. I can't change my password now because my old password doesn't work ..and try as I might to explain this I can't get them to understand this simple fact, even the forgotten password link won't allow me in..and I have to wait around till 10 am to talk to someone....

Damn... it's a bad day already and it's only 5.30 am!

Hi Jenny,
so very sorry to hear what has happened..it really stinks that there are so many creepy people out there. Do you have any idea how it happened?

Nope..They just hijacked it and listed loads of stuff on there. I got a question from an ebay user and it seems this is how they do it get at your info..I can't work how this works but it puts you off responding to questions..but that's how they did it...by asking me a question. I won't be responding to questions anymore...I don't know how you can get around it.

By the way..I did answer the question..but only via my ebay page link so I don't know how they do it.

My last two auctions on e-bay I have had a question from a potential buyer but when I go to the question in my messages it is from a Hong Kong group selling I-Pods and such. No question at all about my bear..  Have totally ignored them, if it happens again I will notify e-Bay..

Hi Jenny

I really do feel for you, so near and now so far.  I am sure your collectors will realise what has happened, you must be absolutely gutted.  I have numerous emails sent to me each day via ebay and even in My Messages from Chinese people trying to sell me handbags and replica watches etc..  I have noticed though that the ones in My Messages in My Ebay have just started to come through in the last fortnight, its strange how they are getting through the net and ebay have not clamped down with them offering to sell goods not through ebay.  I don't know whether using the ebay tool bar with their safety features helps, I did have it once but it kept interferring with my other programmes, a bit too dominent.  On the other hand if you put everyone's tool bar on your screen eventually you would not be able to see haha!

Best wishes Jennie, hope your day improves.

Good Luck

Jenny, easy of me to say, you should not be depressed!
This is so weard! What is wrong with ebay? Reading all the problems people have with being hacked or differently disappointed makes me really angry!
Ebay has grown into a huge industry, so the responsible people should take actions to prevent criminal attacks to their users. This is inacceptable! Sad enough, that when complaining to ebay about that you get nothing but an automated letter to answer them within 2 days how content you are with their answering service. Ridiculous!
Jenny,I hope they can sort everything out and your sweet bear earns what he deserves!!!

Jenny, that has happened to me.It sucks big time!!! and your auction was doing so well! I'm so sorry!!  Always answer ebay questions through ebay and not your personal email.
I was told they some how got a "key logger" virus on my computer which looks for patterns in your keystrokes to find passwords.

bear_angry The filthy, rotten creeps!!!  I'm so sorry this has happened to you Jenny.  Big hugs to you   .  And you answered your questions through your ebay?  What else could you possibly do to protect yourself?!  This is scary really.........and sad that you have to feel you can't answer questions anymore also.  And how does one handle that?  We need to be able to answer questions from bidders! bear_shocked   What a mess! bear_sad

Thinking of you Jenny, and hoping you can get this straightened out soon with ebay.  Don't worry about the bidders though.........they will follow you when this is all put right again, I know it.

Jenny, I'm so sorry this has happened to you.  It's a love/hate relationship with eBay isn't it?

I, too, have been getting bogus buyer questions in my eBay account.  I've also been getting warnings in my account from eBay so they do know what's going on and, I think, they must be trying to get a handle on it.  The unfortunate part is that Pandora is already out of the box and unsuspecting sellers are taking a huge hit.
It's maddening!!

I think I shall head off to eBay to change my password.  It's probably a good idea before I list today anyway.  I have to admit though, after hearing what you're going through, I'm pretty skittish about the whole idea.

I wish you only the best and hope that things get sorted out quick as a wink.

Warmest and biggest bear hugs,

Oh man, I didn't know they could do that. That sucks. Leave it up to a few to ruin it for everybody.

There is clearly a way to get to you,  obviously via ebay questions which we may think are bona fide questions so we answer them . This is when they can hack into your details. I have now downloaded the eBay safety bar..but you don't know the rigmarole I went through just to reinstate my account. I felt like a criminal...

I also think that those who bid on my bear will be fed up with me too..it's all leaving a nasty taste in my mouth!

Tami mentioned keystroke loggers above, that is a very good point to make.  Keystroke loggers are a form of spyware that can "read" what you type into your computer, they are infamous for swiping user IDs and passwords.  If you are not already doing so, obtain and run adware / spyware removal programs on your computer regularly.  The two I use are both free (use both, one may catch things the other may not), they are:

Ad-Aware SE Personal

Spybot Search & Destroy

Best of luck to everyone to stay safe out there!

Jenny,  I'm sorry you have had this happen to you at the end on an auction!  What a nightmare!  I've just changed my password as well, and I think I will do it on a regular basis.  I think your bidders will understand and be back in droves when your bear is back up.  Good luck!

Kelly, thanks for the info - I didn't know there was such a thing as a Keystroke logger!  How naive lots of us are!

Jenny..yes that sure does SUCK!!!  It happened to me also.  I answered a question from my registered email account and that is how they were able to use that to cjnage my password.  HECK!!! I thought you had a security question that needed to be asked to change passwords etc....  Why have them if they won't be needed.  I think ebay makes it too easy for people to access your account.
Once I got thru to the "live chat" ebay called me by phone to make sure I was who I said I was...(well then , why didn't they call the hijacker to prove they actually owned the password they were trying to change????!!!)...and things weer straightened out quickly.

What I don;t understand, Jenny , is how they got into your account when you were answering a question thru the ebay page.  Where the heck is it safe anymore?

Ley us know how it works out for you.

Judi from what I can make out  I did something which led them to be able to get my details. When I got the email I checked 'my ebay' and the question was there too so I thought it would be ok to answer it. Within the message was an 'item number' supposedly also selling my bear..I copied and pasted it into the ebay search and a red page came up which said 'phishing' attempt..so I guess something was encrypted in this 'code' which gave them access to my details. It looked for all the world like a genuine attempt to tell me about a copy of my auction..so I had no reason to suspect. Then my account was suspended and my auction terminated because they had been using my account to sell items such a car..and car parts etc. Could have landed me with a huge ebay bill!!! Fortunately I had contacted ebay before I went to bed to tell them what happened and sent a copy of the email. I still felt like a criminal though!!

Jenny, I had the same thing happen to me and it was for a car being sold too. It's a very frustrating. Then I received an email a few weeks ago that was demanding $$$ from a car auction that was still active. It is very depressing.
