I've been noticing that, as a collector, I LOVE traditional and old fashioned teddies. Jane Perala and Aleta's styles for instance. It's not that I don't LIKE other styles too but I just really go for the traditional old teds.

But when I design bears they are mostly very contemporary... more so now than ever before. I tried to make an old fashioned, almost primitive bear once..... it looked like it was very confussed as to what it was supposed to be! I just don't have it in me to make such bears.

Do you find this odd?
Anyone else collect a style different from what they make?

I'm just the same as you Daphne! I make very contemporary stuff but really love old stick bears - the more bashed up they are, the better I like them!

I was thinking about this very topic today. I LOVE vintage looking bears, the antique, center seam gusset Steiff bears. But my bears take on an anime look. I do like some anime, like Peng Peng bears. I didn't mean to make an anime bear, it just came out. As a kid I really liked Hello Kitty stuff but my folks would never buy it for me, they said it was way overpriced. So as an adult I bought a HK wallet and Badtz Maru coffee cup. Also as a kid I loved the vintage looking Pooh. When they went all bright colors I didn't like it. I think I was meant to live inside a Frog and Toad book...or Little Bear. I am already thinking of my next vignette for my bears...I stay awake at night and wonder aloud. it's very disturbing to my sleep.  I must be tired, I am losing my mind here.

There are some bears on this forum I would LOVE to buy, I just don't have near the cash and they are well worth it. I should start a fund and save for one!

I am getting a nice collection of tiny crocheted teddies, and even though I can crochet, I never intend to make one. The amount of tiny stitches in them just amazes me!

Yeah, I have pondered this question  a lot also Daphne!!  It's strange, but like you I go for the really traditional style bears -   I dunno why.. I just do.

I do make some traditional teds, and people seem to like them, but to me they aren't quite right? I dunno why.

I also love the contempory style bears, the wackier the better.. but if I had my drothers - I would go for the Trad ted too!  I find it strange that we tend to make bears that we wouldn't really collect.  I think I would have in the start - perhaps people grow....???

I love the traditional bears, and I make traditional bears with my own New Avenue Crew twist.   bear_original bear_laugh I want to try some other styles...but oh, the lack of time!! I've made three kitties and even a pig (all on my Web site in the family album)--and they're certainly not traditional. bear_laugh

I love really beautifully thought out pattern designs that push the edge. It doesn't have to be a bear.  I look at the sculptural elements and if the character looks back at me. I tend to design realistic animals but I'm drawn to fantasy characters. Some artists create characters that just take me out of the world I'm in; I love that  bear_rolleyes
