I cant find the DPI for my pics in my Cybershot program. It will give me image size and ISO(what ever that is?)
But NO DPI.  When I go into My HP Printer program to finish editing them I find that the DPI of my pics  is 72.
I cant find anywhere to alter this. The only way with this Hp program is by printing it out and then scanning back in. Then the DPI can be set to what ever I want. But that is any good because the printing ruins the pic so that scanning in is useless.
What I wish to know is... How can I set the DPI for pictures from another program and from the camera.
I had the image sze on the camera set at 3m. I changed that for a test shot to 6m. It didnt make any difference. Still no DPI and when pic moved to HP program again it is at 72dpi..  I need it tobe 300dpi.
PLEASE how do I do this???

It is a bIG problem for me. I am unable to submit my photos to any publications until I can get this right.
They all insist that my photos be 300dpi or more.

Hi Wendy

Turn the camera on and push the menu button.

Then the big 4 way button click to move to the right   ISO is film speed....I won't go into that at the moment ....keep pushing the right button past this

Nex t is image size - and choose the highest numbers possible....this is equal to DPI.

Next is P Quality choose FIne

Next is Mode - choose Normal NOT email ad Email will lower the quality.

Your cyber shot may be different to my old on which is about 6 years old but hopefully this will help.

I found IMAGE SIZE, thankyou. It is the 3m-6m thingy. Because when I went the other way It came up email size.
This didnt make any difference before when I tried it. I had the P already on Fine. But forgot the function was even there. bear_grin Thanks for the reminder.
I'll play around with your tips tomorrow. Thankyou for the help Sandy. It is much appreciated. bear_thumb

Sandra I did all that you said and was able to understand as well. (thats a biggy. The understanding bit)
It didnt work. again the pics are 72dpi.
I have read the instructions. Its not that I'm a complete ditz. But there isnt any thing on the DPI. Personally I think that is strange.
I'm now off to find websites for this. .Its all such a bummer.....I am now missing delines. all that work gone to waste. Its enough to make me want to  bear_cry ....SIGH........sigh......
Thanks for your help Sanda. bear_thumb
I realised the iso  on my camera is 1000. (just for interest sake)

Wendy- all my cameras have been sony cybershots-
I have a program called MGI photosuite(old program) and then some others more fancy ones that came with the cameras as they were updated.
When you upload the pictures onto your pc- what program opens the pictures ?
ISO- measures light sensitivity- the higher the ISO, the greater the light sensitivity-
OK- I am a smarty pants- because I am busy doing the "SHOOT" photography course with Nancy at E-B university BUT I AM STILL LEARNING

http://xnview.com/
go to English version
then click on the download for the XN VIEW- download
I sent you a new version by email( see if you get it)

This is a very simple program to use- in the RESIZE section take your picture and then just change the DPI from 72 to 300 DPI - you will get a much bigger picture which you will have to re size, but play around until you get something that is acceptable. In photoshop you get lots of options etc but this person seems to has taken it all and made it simplified in this XN view program
I am also not sure if this is how you actually change your pictures but it has worked for me when i have sent pictures in for publication so give it a shot.

I agree that it would be easiest to use the program above to do the conversion to 300 dpi.
In the meantime I will try to explain how it works on your camera (or most cameras). Your camera itself is not taking a picture at 72 dpi or 300 dpi for that matter. It is taking a picture at a set number of pixels as apposed to pixels per inch or dots per inch. An example would be ... on my old Sony camera, .. it was a 3.2 megapixel camera at it's highest resolution. At that resolution, the picture measured (in pixels) 1536x 2048. Now when I open that picture in say photoshop, before doing anything else, I could go into "resize". When I look at what it shows about the picture before resizing, it would say my picture was 1536 pixels wide and 2048 pixels height and the resolution would say 72 dpi. If I looked at that picture at 100% it would be HUGE. REALLY HUGE! So if I wanted to change it to 300 dpi, I would type the 300 in the box where the 72 was. If I leave the width and heighth at 1536 and 2048, then go back and look at the picture, it would be much smaller. But the thing to note, is the picture is STILL 1536 wide and 2048 high. I don't know what program you are opening your pictures in. If it is Microsoft Photo Editor (usually the default on a Windows computer) you will never be able to change it to 300 dpi. It automatically saves your picture at 72 dpi. It also saves it in a really lossy format.

The point being that your camera is taking the picture at whatever resolution you set. You can't really tell your camera to take a picture at 72 or 300 dpi. You can tell it to take a picture at a lower resolution (email mode) or F or Fiune which is a higher resolution.  If you set it at F or fine.. it will take the highest resolution it is possible to take. It is the program you are opening it with that is limiting you from being able to set it at 300 dpi.  A picture that is 1536 pixels x 2048 pixels is 21.33 inches by 28.444 inches at 100% if it is 72 dpi. The same picture (1536 x2048) is 5.120 inches by 6.827 inches at 100% if it is 300 dpi. BOTH pictures are exactly the same except in size.  They both have the same number of pixels total, just that looking at them at 300 dpi squeezes the pixels closer together so the picture looks smaller
Boy, I think I probably conmfused you even more.

Thankyou Sonya and Lynette for responding.  bear_thumb
You havent confused me Sonya I had figured most of it out myself. I just didnt know what to do with the info  bear_grin
I am using the camera program to open them in. Which is saving them at 72dpi. If I was able to open them in my Hp program I wouldnt have this problem. I can only do the change if I open them in that program not if I move them. Big time  annoying.  I did find out about that ISO. And where it should be set at. (thats just a side line. no need to pay attention to that) bear_grin
I will go and download XNVIEW and we will see what happens. Thanks for that Lynette
wish me luck!! I have a feeling I will be needing it?? bear_grin

In the program I sent youat the top, you seeFile, Edit, view, IMAGE, under IMAGE,
click on the RESIZE, here you can change the pixels, it is normally I think by default (set to 72, ) so change it to 300
Here in this option you see you get all sorts of things you can do with your picture set it to Custom, to different sizes, so not having used it that much all I can say is PLAY with it and see what happens.

Thankyou Denise. I have now been able to do the task in Irfanview.  I dont like their editing program though. So have now found that I must do the cropping and such before I send them to Irfanview and change them there and then email them from there. Which at the moment all this rigmarole  has been way too stressful for me so I am now giving up.
Thankyou everyone for your help.  bear_thumb You are all wonderful .
Bye!!

XnView for Windows 9x/NT/2000/Me/Xp"
Wendy this is the version I am using. It said do I want to send it to a friend and I inserted your email addy- so not sure where it has been sent to.
I tried sending you something else- but not sure what you will get- I think it might be the handicap helping the handicap here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All I know is that this program was given to me to use as it is very easy to use- my webmaster passed it onto me as he knows my capabilities!!! so maybe the version you downloaded is not the same as what I have- see if you come right as it is a very simple easy progrm to use.

Lynette, I found that once I downloaded the XNview that it filled up the gaps I had in my IRFANVIEW program. That is why I can use the DPI change in Irfanview now. Where it didnt have the function before. Yet the XNview program I downloaded didnt have the function that I was after.
It was never about not knowing what to do. It has been about where do I find the function that apparently was non existent in my programs.      I'll check out the one that came via email this morning and see what happens.
At the moment I am all computed out. Totally and completely.  It will take me a few days to recover. At the moment I'm rather resentful of how much TIME this computer STEALS from me.
I'm starting to think that at some time I should also enroll in the E-Bearz photo class.
You have been a brilliant help Lynette. Thankyou.
