This is the strangest question...

Have you ever heard of a male neutered cat becoming...well...unneutered?   My 4 year old NEUTERED (or so the vet told me) cat has suddenly become interested in Skippy...yes HER again.  We still can't catch her ... damn it...and she's well...in heat AGAIN.   There has been a grey cat hanging around (same one as last spring when we lost her last litter of kittens) and Samech our male has become very aggressive, chasing him away and herding Skippy much like Surrender did.  THEN, we actually saw him...well you know.... bear_shocked   bear_shocked

What the heck...he's been fixed...I even asked the vet when I had him in for shots in November to be certain (although I was confident he was.)

Skippy is giving me more GREY hair then I deserve.  Surrender has become so fat and lazy he just stretches, purrs and wants to be petted all the time.

So...anyone heard of such weirdness?  I swear I'm in the Twilight Zone sometimes.

Hi Shantell!
I think it's probably a dominance thing and that they only snipped the parts, not the overall instinctual drive.  Not to be too gross...but my mom has a huge nuetered orange tabby that tortures stuffed animals.  It's a sad sight to walk into bunnies, teddies (not mine!!!), and other little fluffy stuffies sprawled out.  Once the toy was a blue bear (dog toy) that played rock a bye baby....I was staying at my mom's and had to run downstairs to take the stupid toy away from the naughty cat, otherwise I would have heard that song all night.  He's grabbed sweaters from the dry cleaning pile as well <gross> bear_shocked  bear_grin Naughty cats!!

Hi Shantell,

Hmmmm I'm really not sure what to say to your problem.  But I would think it's no different than when a dog is fixed you still will see "HIM" now and then  , part of the reason I don't have male cats or dogs I don't want to see "HIM" .  I would think he could become territorial over the female whether he is fixed or not.  I"m only guessing here,   but darn cute cats though .

big hugs

Hi Shantell,
I agree with Chrissi - Surrender was well into adulthood when he was neurtered.   He may not be able to father kittens, but the dominance and the urge may still be there.  Maybe it's a good thing, as Surrender AND Samech may keep all the other male cats at bay?  I think I'd round up all of your kids and their friends and catch Skippy, once and for all.  Maybe you can first get her into the garage, and catch her with a net or throw a towel over her, but making sure you have gloves on, so she doesn't scratch anyone.  She really needs to be fixed, pronto!

PS  Surrender has definitely put on weight since you sent me pictures of him - he really is a beauty.  Are you still having trouble with his eyes?

Hi Brenda,

Yep, he's fattened up A LOT.  We still are having eye issues.  He's on a double round of antibiotics and we are working on getting him to let us touch is face so we can get medicine IN his eyes.  Just taking patience but he's coming along nicely.  He's started rolling around on his back and batting at us like a kitten...it's hysterical.  He doesn't understand "NO CLAWS."   He rubs on you so hard that if you aren't paying attention he'll actually knock you over if you are knelt down to his level.  He's just a joy!!!

Skippy....I agree 110%.  We have tried so many times to catch her.  I've contacted everyone under the sun and they all say the same thing so I know we are doing it right...she's just too smart for her own good.

I thought of dominance thing too...except Samech is such a big wimp...he's literally afraid of his own shadow.   I guess hormones take over.         I was shocked at his behaviour this afternoon.  I'm still a bit shocked.  He's just never shown any interest in her or Slinky (not pictured).

The photo was taken while they were waiting to be fed.  Skippy had been knocking on the glass with her "flipper."  She likes to let us know when it's dinner time....like we don't already know.  BRATS!!!

Hugs,

Shantell....
so, do you just put food out for them?  bring them in to eat or what? ... why don't you bring in the others and feed them but not give her any for a while.....I am sure she will come around when she is hungry.

Hi Shantell!
I'm not up to speed on all of the past Skippy posts, but have you ever tried the traps used by the SPCA/Humane Society to catch and fix cats?  In my area you can use them for free with the trap, neuter, release programs.  You just lace it with yummy stuff like tuna or moist food and catch (the right, sometimes take a few tries with multiples) cat. If she's a smarty who can run away keep her in the trap and don't try to transfer her into a carrier in order to take to your vet.

Yep, tried the traps...she just looks at it like we are idiots for even attempting to trap her.  Anytime she suspects somethings up (even when it's not) she hides and then peeks around corners, under bushes, etc. to see what we are doing.  She's a smart little number.   We can't leave them out at night because we also have racoons and skunks...EWWWWWWWW!!!

We can't not feed her because she can hunt and although we live in the country there are other food sources for her if she were to get hungry enough.

I've talked to HSUS/SPCA, my friend who is a vet, animal control...you name it.  They all tell me the same thing.  JUST KEEP TRYING.  It's exhausting...and then we have to rebuild trust with her.  Luckily, when I do catch her, I can just take her right to the vet...no appointment...they are waiting for her too!!!

I need a big net and a harpoon!!!!

Hi Shantell,
How about a big "butterfly net" (that sort of thing) on a long handle?  You could try from behind and just put the net over her.  You'd  have to have your room mate or someone ready to throw a blanket or something overtop as well, so you could scoop her up.  I wish I were closer - I'd love to try and catch her.  It's like a puzzle/game and I love this sort of thing.

Or what about when she's in her little house at night - could you not just block the entrance with a piece of wood and duct tape it closed until you got her to the vet?

                                    hugs,

                                    Brenda

Max.jpgI love that picture, Shantell!  bear_original  bear_original Oh my!  Surrender is so.....um....fluffy!   bear_happy  Samech has turned into a beautiful cat.   bear_wub   That leaves us with Skippy.  Oh that Skippy girl is a quick one!

For those of you new around TT, Surrender and Skippy are the parents of four kittens who's story unfolded underneath Shantell's deck last April.  Imagine, if you will, Shantell peering through the floor boards of her deck trying to get pictures of the newborn kittens!!  Well, it was love at first sight!!  My two grown children and I adopted all four kittens.  I have Max.  My daughter and her husband have King Oscar and my son has Gir and Cheri.  All are healthy, happy and pretty well adjusted.

Except for Max.  Oh, he's healthy and happy.....and for the most part, well adjusted.  However, the little stinker has a wild streak in him like his mom, Skippy.  Otherwise he's a lovey just like his papa, Surrender.

So, Shantell, I do understand about Skippy.  Totally.     Did I send you this picture of Max already?

Warmest bear hugs,

I agree with what has been said.  If your cat was neutered as an adult, he already knows what it is all about.  While he may not be able to father kittens, he still can go through the motions.  We can only hope that he will keep other males away, but chances are he will not be successful.  Also, if the female does not get pregnant, she will come into heat again real soon.  So goes the life of the cat.  I have no real suggestions for catching her.  We went through the same thing last summer.  A little cat that we began feeding presented us with 4 kittens.  When Mia first came around, she was super flighty and in poor health.  It was just a matter of time before we were finally able to touch her and handle her enough to get her taken to be spayed.  No special tricks, just a lot of special attention.  I wish you luck.

Oh Aleta,
Max has grown into one gorgeous boy and I think he knows it!  Look at that gorgeous face!!  He's going to be a big boy, when he gets older and fills out.  I'm sure Walker can keep up with him but poor Gracie!
You'll have to talk your son and daughter into sending pics of King Oscar, Gir and Chen - I'd love to see them too.
I've totally decided that orange cats are a breed unto themselves - they are smart, cagy and have lots of attitude.  It sounds like Max fits the bill and he is keeping you all on your toes!

All my animals, except for the two kittens DK I & II are neutered (their turn is coming). One of my neutered Boston's has a 'thing' for the male kitten. It is very embarassing to see this 35 lb Boston on top of a small black kitten    He doesn't hurt the kitten but I'm sure he'll need counselling some day to deal with the abuse.

Not to compare a cat to a dog, but....  when my "baby" dog, (who thinks he's an 80 lb. cat) that  I recused from the pound was "fixed", he was about 2 years old.  We've had him 2 years now and when any females in the area are in heat, we have to try to keep them away from him, and vice versa.  We have (and not to be too descriptive) ... we have had to "turn the water hose on" to , umm, rectify the situation.  So, yes...  having the operation may not deter the actions, just the outcome.   bear_grin

Definitely got a dominance thing going on...Surrender has decided to reclaim his mate back this morning.  Poor Poor Skippy...she looks likes she been put through the ringer over and over again.

I'm putting on my full cat armor and going in the for the capture.  Wish me luck...I'll let you know when I've caged the mighty beast.               (you'd laugh if you saw her...she's a tiny little thing...but all claws and fangs.)

Aleta...I love that photo.  You did send it to me.  Max is and has always been adorable.  You just couldn't help but love him from the moment he was born...all that fuzzy furry apricot snugglyness.    AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!
