I just spotted this on the Yahoo News site on the internet.  They have discovered that the stuff in the cat food that caused the animals to die was RAT POISON!  The stuff used isn't even licensed to kill rats in the U.S although it is used for cancer treatment!  Noone is saying, but it sure sounds like it might have been deliberate?  I just don't understand what is going on in the world today.

I just saw this too Brenda.  Makes me sick to my stomach to think of all the people feeding their beloved pets what they thought was well made food, to only find it's literally poison!!  With the pet industry booming as it is this incident should get some serious regulations and guides in place for companies to follow.  The pet industry is making millions upon millions off of us...they need to be regulated and held to a much higher standard.  Self regulation is not acceptable when the dollar is the deciding factor and not the overall well being of those they're selling to.

This recall has brought SO much more to my attention.  Some things that I still find myself cringing over.  I didn't realize how food companies test the foods...how cats and dogs are caged and treated, how the animals are not just given foods to eat...but illnesses and conditions are induced to see how the food affects.  Iams I've found is notorious for this.  Just one of the incidents I read about this week tells of Iams taking 19 Beagles and having their gums surgically altered to replicate gingivitis...just so they could do a food based test.  This was done instead of having clinical testing done with pets who already have the condition. Meaning, rather than set up a test with a vet clinic, pets already having the condition and their owners in order to track the condition....  Iams instead decided to deform and essentially torture 19 little Beagles with surgically induced gum disease. bear_cry   I have a beagle...and unfortunately I know that they're the animal of choice for testing due to size and their overly docile and happy nature bear_cry   Whole thing makes me sick....and has made me just this week search out pet food companies that do not use these practices.  Once I'm aware I can't support with my hard earned dollars.  bear_angry  bear_cry Poor beagles... <ugh>

bear_ermm Latest I've heard from NPR radio is that the Wheat Gluten with the poison came from China. The rat poison that is the culprit is illegal (as rat poison) in the U.S.. Who knows, the rat poison could have been used around the Wheat or was used in the ship or got mixed in accidentally? How could we check these shipments from China and why in the heck are we importing Wheat Gluten from China? And how many other foods are using this imported Wheat Gluten, including human foods?

That is terrible!!! I have been really upset over all of that!
I only feed my Westie, human food, chicken & rice, veggies & fruit and a mulit vitamin.
I have heard some terrible things about some of these Dog & Cat  food companies!

OK the rat poison was in the Wheat Gluten that went into the animal food......

am I the only nutcase here to take this scenario to the next level......

cat food today

baby food tomorrow?

Maybe "THEY"  did not know it was destined for animal food and really planned on it being in the human food chain?

So what does this sound like?

Starts with a T and its not a pretty thought.  But it has made me rethink buying pre-prepared foods.......

dilu..... ever paranoid yet vigilant....and is it paranoia when the whole world hates you?

Dilu, I had one thought like that too....

"We're" all watching airports and power stations and "they" might be taking on the food supply. Who knows anymore.  Sad scary thing nowadays bear_sad

There's LOTS of bad things coming out of China now that they are trying to catch up to the rest of the world!!!  I am on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission email list for recalls (you can sign up here: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpsclist.asp)  and I was SHOCKED at how many toys, jewelry for KIDS, etc have been recalled for LEAD!!!!  And gee... guess where they were manufactured???  CHINA!!!!!!!!

I read the first article too.... and they mentioned that no criminal investigation was planned.... well... if this was food intended for humans they sure would!!!   I'm sorry but my dogs are like my kids (and my daughter doesn't mind!)  and I sure would want a CRIMINAL investigation!!!!!

Laura Lynn,

Have your tried buying only Canadian, European or American?  We used to avoid China like the plague, but now?  It is nearly impossible.  And sometimes we think we suceeded, and then find a small print that says "Components made in China"

You are so right!!!!

Now, to try and show a glass half full; 30 years ago I couldn't afford silk to save my soul, now we can all buy silk for many projects, not just weddings.  I am using silk floss for embroidery-for little nothing gifts...things that will be thrown away....who is as old as dirt like me and remembers silk being such a pricy commodaty we would never think of doing this?

Never-the-less, silk does not a full life make, and I agree our pets are our family and I believe we should have a criminal investigation.

If enough of us put pressure on our congressional representatives we can force their hand.......

PS thanks for that link-I'm going to sign up too   bear_wub

We've stopped using all wet foods until this whole thing is fully cleared up and aired out.  Our cats are loving little bits of tuna with their dry food.  The dogs too....no wet food for us right now!!  It's just too risky........not loosing a dog or cat over a $1.00 can of food and some big$$ jerk at the processing plant covering his rump not wanting to get fired.

I hear you on that Chrissi, but our problem is our cats have urinary tract issues and they need the wet food and are not allowed high sodium or anything with fish.  I was just on the web site for both menu foods and Science Diet and they both said that the perscription diets from the vets are NOT part of the recall, I also read the ingredients and there is no wheat gluten (listed anyways) in the food we have.  I have as a precaution thrown it all away though.  My mom said that there was a vet on tv telling people to add water to the dry food  and neuke it in the microwave and that way they get the moisture they need from a wet food without the worry (for now).  I wil be calling my vet tomorrow anyways and not purchasing any other food 'till we really know what's going on.
Still worried though bear_noexpression
