Back Road BearsI can't BUY dog collars small enough for my custom dogs.... I have one I'm working on now and want to make a collar out of some cotton fabric I have. I want it to be stiff enough but not too heavy... there needs to be something inside it or layered to it. What though? Suggestions?

Have you tried Podgy or something similar? I am sure Michaels could help you out

Little Bear GuyPodgy is like Hodge Podge, you use it for doing decoupage. It's a stiffener for fabric, works quite well actually

I have to agree SueAnn, Heavy weight iron on interfacing is what I'd suggest. When you are ironing it on, if you do use it, Make sure you DAB the iron on the interfacing not iron normal else it makes it go out of shape
Also, What about some calico? You could use your normal fabric and line it with calico, may be a little harder to turn but will give it a nice weight so it will look more like a dog collar hanging and be stiffer.

Richy I do think interfacing is the answer. I use a pressing cloth when I use it.
Hmm... this could be fun. I don't have time to quilt these days so my fabric needs to be used for something!

how small do you need them? I have seen pretty tiny ones at the pet shops... chihuahua (sp?) size. Also... some of the little shops that have all the mod. type jewellery and whatnot for the kids.... they are wearing things similar to dog collars as wrist bands ... leather with diamante studs etc...
perhaps if u make them out of some stiffer type fabric that is a leather look alike...upholstery vinyl or something?
Chaska, MinnesotaWell the question is, does it have to be fabric? If not, buy a rhinestone bracelet at target or better yet e-bay. Take out as many links as needed to fit the neck. Your doggie will be "high class" with a diamond collar. If it is a boy dog, go with darker color like deep blue....Just thinking outside the box here.....
Back Road BearsI've looked in pet shops.... nothing is small enough.... and rhinestones aren't the answer this time around. I LOVE to handmake my accessories whenever possible and I've gotten the hardware for the buckles, d rings, etc. so I just wanted to figure out the fabric part.
I'm off to JoAnn's for interfacing....
Daphne, I make some small dogs and have found some leather bracelets at firemountaingems that come in brown and black. They have a nice D ring in the center for a tag. The more you buy the less they cost.

Matilda Huggington-beareI dont know if others have suggested it Daphne but you can fold the fabric maybe 3-4 times and iron it. That should give the amount of thickness needed. I ladder stitck the seam with invisible thread.
I would love to see what you finally come up with.

Jare Hares & BearsMom usually hand makes hers from leather scraps.
Otherwise you can use fray block, spread a thin coat all over the fabric and that will stiffen it.
But I think the pattern and interfacing that you are going to use will be the best for what you are doing.
