Hey everyone! I'm working on a pattern at the moment (shock horror!) that has strange instructions for the ears... it says:

"Stitch ears together leaving straight edge open (fine). Turn right side out and over sew straight edge (also fine). Fold ears in half again and stitch together making a quarter moon shape.

Ehhh????

Do they mean I should fold them in half along the straight edge, or up to the curve? It's hard to tell on the finished bear, which is here:

Can anyone shed some light for me?

Chloe... they probably just mean fold the rounded parts over on themselves...the straight part will still be the portion you stitch to the head, although once you stitch it together a bit..it might be more of a V shape?  ..it makes it look like there is an earhole I guess if you fold over the rounded edges.  Never heard of this before..but there is always a first time for everything eh?

I know Veronica, it seems so weird! I usually sew in a cup shape anyway, but the ears seem much bigger than in the picture... I'll probably just fole the straight edge in A LOT :P

Thanks!

Hmm, a quarter moon shape sounds like you are supposed to fold the straight edge up and sew it along the curved upper line, which would then become the bottom I guess. Sewing the straight edge along the curve would cup the ear, but it would also become a very thick ear. Maybe you can email the pattern designer?

I say nuts to it all!  bear_tongue
I read those directions and looked at the picture and it doesn't make sense to me and I have done this for close to 20 years now.
I would say figure out what you want the ears to look like and then re-cut them if you need to get the shape you want.
I think they mean to fold the ear in half to make a quarter circle and sew the straight edges together and then attach the staight edges to the bear's head.  But I would think that would make for some interesting ears???? bear_rolleyes
I am a big fan of adjusting the pattern to suit your needs.  Otherwise, I hope the designer can provide you with more pictures :photo: to make it easier to understand.  If she/he does would you share them with us?  I want to know how it is done.
