The only part of the design process that I seem to have a lot of problems with is ear design.  The proportions is what I have problems with.

How do you decide how long, how high and what shape.  Is there a formula that you use when designing ears ie 1/2 of the depth of head???

Hi jane,

Would this not depend also on the length of fur? If you scissor sculpt the face and the fur lies flat would this not also not make the ears bigger or smaller?

I would finish my bear up and once finished cut and sew up the ears like this: Make the ear shapes you think would look good but make them higher then normal. Pin them to the head and if they look too big then fin them with some more tucked under until you find the size you need. Once you find the size you need, pin the ear on the line they fit to the head. Add seam allowance and cut them. That way, if you don't make OOAK's you can then turn the ears and take a pattern of the size you think looks good and then sew the up.

Just sharing some ideas, hope I explain things ok

Actually, I don't think there is a right or wrong answer. I think shaping and sizing the ear that you think looks best on the bear. Placement of the ear also makes a difference too. After you get the head done, hold up the paper ear pattern and see how it looks. You can re-cut the pattern until you get an ear you like before cutting into your fabric.  That is my advice.

Think one of my favorite thing these days is to refer question-ers to our library, located right above your avatar, Jane.  There is an "EARS" subject there and maybe the info will be of some help.
