Hello all! I know a lot of people have been asking me about this guy, so I've decided to add a sneak peak at what I have so far: meet my sloth! (I hope he's in the right gallery).

It's a terrible picture, taken using only my desk lamp as lighting, but it should give you an idea of where I am... He's my first ever attempt at needle felting, eyelids and a double neck joint, which hasn't been completed in this shot, and his face still needs LOADS of work, so he probably won't look like this when you see him next....

Anyhoo, any tips and observations are eagerly taken into account! I can never see the flaws in my own work, and I always need someone else to point them out... please, nit pick away!

EDIT: I've added a shot of Sloth mark two, with the proper facial markings, as seen here: http://www.hedweb.com/animimag/sloth.jpg . Still working on his nostrils and mouth line, but the markings are there... I've also corrected his squint, but his eyelids need re-fixing...

WOOHOO!!! After receiving my samples of tissavel from Faux throw, I can happily tell you all that original sloth can be completed! The fur was Tisavel after all! However, I won't be ordering his fur until the end of the month when I get paid, so until then... Sloth Two proudly awaits your comments   As you can see he's going to be much smaller, and is a chance for me to work out his patterns without it costing so much... although I've already made a few costly mistakes! I now have two disembodied sloth heads... I'm a bit strange...

You are certainly coming along very well indeed. BRAVO!

Thank you Matilda, I'm glad you like him especially: I too thought he'd be a disaster and so far the only MASSIVE problem I'm having is with the body shape: Sloths are a weird shape!

Beautiful face!
Sloths are such ancient creatures and were so important on many Continents, including Western US. You've captured that wise ancient face. Congratulations!   :clap:

I'm glad you like his face, but I think he still needs some work: he's a little wall-eyed now I've double-jointed his neck, but hopefully some sculpting will fix that...

I think you'd better wait for the finished product before you give me a mini cardiac arrest with a comment like that again!  At the moment his body is REALLY hacking me off, but fingers crossed it'll work out... it already has about 6 pieces too it, and it still looks funny...

I meant all the compliments and be CAREFUL! Sloths ARE a bit wall-eyed. I think you intuitively picked up on that. I believe that look is part of his appeal. Sometimes we get ourselves into trouble when we over think something. Keep things as simple as you can and get the essence of the creature you're creating. Only add what is absolutely necessary

Sloth has just ad a teeny makeover, but only to increase his accuracy: I restuffed his head to stop one eye protruding further than the other (you can't see it in this piccy) and I've added the little dark markings around the nose, mouth and eyes that these guys have (I am a Zoologist, after all!) I'll add a new piccy as soon as I can, and I hope you like his makeover too!

I think he is fab.Sloths always look like something Brian Froud would have created and you have managed to get that sleepy slightly other wordly look.I dont think his face needs much more doing to it.Be careful you dont lose that dozy bening look you have managed.I just love sloths.I cant wait to see the finished article.Great work.

Unfortunately he's progressing quite slowly: I started my summer job on Monday and it's taking a lot out of me!  Plus I've had a few problems with his body... hopefully I'll have more done soon :)

He's gorgeous

I agree--you don't want to lose that unfocused slothy look. It's essential.

When I have trouble designing a body, I usually look for pictures of an animal's skeleton. It really helps me to get the proportions right to see the relative sizes of the bones and how the beastie is "hinged."

Looooved the slothlets--now I want one

Oooh, thanks for the tip! I just remembered I have a book of skeletons at home that has a Sloth in it: can't wait to check that!

The onle problem is that the belly is pudgy to the point of obesity at the minute, but hopefully I'll be able to trim that off...

I like the look of the Lynx tissavel, but I don't know if that's right for him... anything light grey or a lighter, cold brown would be wonderful for a sloth I think: the grey could be COPIC'ed to make it into a 'blonde' sloth

I have had a look on there, Cat, but everytime I go on I am SO tempted by the double Lynx bedspread it's almost unreal.... i want it SOOOO much :P

Would you say that was the best place to go for then? I can certainly give them a go   I'll see what Mo has tucked away first...
