when i made ratwolf - now susans -
i used butons to make small joints
and sewed between them ... i have recently seen an item i admired that said it was string jointed
does that involve small disks and large knots?

Hi Cat,

String jointing does not involve small disks and large knots. It doesn't involve disks at all. To string joint I usually use sinew and a 6" or longer doll needle.

To joint the limbs you go into the body where the right leg would join and then out the other side where the left leg would join, go into the left leg and then deep into the stuffing and come back out the same hole. Go back into the body in the same hole you came out and then back out the right side. Go into the right inside leg and then deep into the stuffing and come back out the same hole. Then pull the string ends very tightly and tie off using a surgeons knot. An important tip is to make sure you don't split the sinew when going back out the same hole or through the body as the string will not pull tight enough. I usually knot two times and then bury the ends in the body. Do the same thing for the arms.

I hope that made sense. I wish I had a picture to help you.

Hi Cat,

It is not very easy to do. Sometimes on the very small bears I use a curved needle just for this part. You could also come out the back seam, take a stitch across one of the stitches used to sew up the leg/arm and go back in.This is a little easier but you have to use a thin needle or you will leave a hole.

Holler if you need some help.

If you do a search on string-jointing I'm sure you'll find some pics explaining it.
I like to string-joint my smaller mini's  -you can still move the limbs but they're snugger to the body.
As for sinew - you can get it at Sassy, in different colors. I have white, black and tan - indispensable for jointing and pulled toes.,..also eyes.
