Hi everyone, I've been reading all the previous posts about using liquid sculpey/fimo for making wings.  Finally I've just tried to make my first pair for a mini bear and didn't exactly work.  bear_wacko  I printed off a pair of wings onto white paper from my printer.  Then added a thin layer (maybe too thin?) on top of the paper images.  Should I have done a wider border around the outside of the paper?  I wanted to have a nice crisp edge.  The paper would not peal off so as suggested in the instructions I soaked the paper off but it needed rubbing to get the paper off.  Some of the image has transferred but the strong colours and green have not taken at all  bear_ermm   Any thoughts where I may have gone wrong?  Also I put a layer of wire along the top edge, but this doesn't look right and shows up too much, how do you add wire to it?

Do you all use the wire for attaching to your bears and how do you do this?

Please help someone so I can have another go!

Catherine, I can't offer any advice but can empathise !  I had the same results when I tried to make a pair.  I haven't tried again since.   I wasn't happy with the way the wire showed up either.   I wonder if it needs to be different type of paper ???  Good luck with your next attempt . bear_thumb

Hmmm.... I don't use the photo/printer transfer method when I make wings either, so I'm afraid I can't be of much help in that particular area.

I know that Kim Whitlock (Bear Bottoms Originals) had some fabulous results using the transfer gel in that manner... you might eMail her for some advice... I know she's a bit busy with her new baby... but I'm sure she'd love to help if she can.   bear_wub

I often use sheer, organza type fabric for wings, and I sandwich the wire between two layers (one on front of the wire.. one on the rear).  the wire is still visable through the layer of fabric, but it is covered, and I often make the wire part of the veining design of the wing anyway.  I've done the same with mulberry paper as well.

FUNNY! I have been working on wings this week too! I went thru all of the old postings on wings and learned quite abit. I spent half a day driving to every place in our small town to look for liquid polymer clay with no luck. I found some on the internet but haven't purchased yet.
I ended up settling on glass for this bear.
I am hoping to try the liquid next week I am going to send my daughter to Michaels in Reno since she is coming home this week end.
I am wondering if you can color the paper your self, i.e. with prisma watercolor pencils?? does that work to transfer to the polymer?? or will it bleed. I will have to try that any suggestions here??

Catherine, I would be trying a diferent type of paper.
Thou I have not used paper in this way with filmo, as I transfer onto clear plastic, some papers would be more suited than others.

thanks everyone, I tried again yesterday, this time with tracing paper.  I painted some wings onto it with watercolours.  This transferred better, although I had not done the colours strongly enough.  The paper did leave a slight residue I felt even after soaking in water.  I also found that one side was shiney and the other side all matt and not so nice, maybe need to fimo it twice.  The biggest thing I did not like was the fumes that are created when cooking it in the oven - the oven smelt all chemically afterwards - anyone else have this problem when doing it too?  this is taking longer than sewing my wee little bear  bear_wacko  bear_wacko

Somewhere on here is my tutorial on how I make my wings. I only use good quality parchment tracing and colored pencils to do mine. I have not used Liquid Fimo, I use Liquid Sculpey. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that Charlotte, I had actually found this tutorial and this is what inspired me to give it a go bear_original  Your wings look just perfect.  I was trying with jewellery wire which I think is too fine, I couldn't keep it in the right place on the paper whilst trying to add the liquid fimo on top.  Is Parchment tracing paper the same as normal tracing paper, I can't quite picture what kind of paper this is?

You are most welcome Catherine, awww glad you like my wings
I did a web search for Bienfang Parchment and found this link for the paper I use:
http://art-supplies.misterart.com/store … -Paper.htm
It's not regular tracing paper, and I don't know if it would work or not.
As for using wire, I used Florist Wire & layed it carefully on the outside edge lines of the wings & slowly squeezed out a line of Liquid Sculpey on the top of the wire. Then I squeezed a bit more Sculpey inside the wings & smoothed that out with a tooth pick or small paint brush until the entire inside was filled in & smooth.
Hope this explanation helps.

Hi, not much time but I thought I'd pop in.

I make my liquid squlpy wings by just mixing paint in it and going from there. I've never tried the whole paper transfer thing. I also never bake mine for 15 mins like the package says. I also use a toaster over and bec. it's only in there for 5 mins or so I never notice a foul smell.

Catherine, as far as I know parchment paper. It's the stuff I buy at the grocery store. It's with the plasic wrap and tin foil. It's meant to line baking pans with. It's very non stick so I can see how it would work with what you are trying to do.

Good luck, PM me if you have any more questions

Hi Catherine
While looking around the world of blogs tonight I came across thisdollmakersmuse.blogspot.com/2006/11/free-pattern.html
It looks pretty simple and the effect is really pretty!

Cheryl: I never made wings before but looking at the blog you posted made me want to jump up and try!! What a fun tutorial.....I just have to get myself together and design something which I have not done in months....Just too busy....but I will tuck this idea away for another day. Thanks for posting it.
