I don't know about you, but it irks me when people help themselves to the pics on my website. Recently, my photographs were used without my permission, when someone wanted to sell my work second hand on Ebay. It wasn't my original customer using them, but someone she had subsequently sold my work on to.
This situation has highlighted my lack of website skills. Yes, I can maintain my website and I've developed it a great deal since it was originally built, but I haven't a clue how to protect it. I've slapped copyright notices right through it, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to deter anyone from stealing my images without first asking me. For heavens sake, whatever happened to common courtesy? Surely it's only polite to ask before helping oneself? Hmph!
There are many pics of my work on my website, so now I'd like to be able to do the 'right hand disabled' thing, which prevents the photographs from being copied and pasted elsewhere. Can anyone give me any advice on how to achieve this please? I use Fireworks to edit my pics and Dreamweaver to edit my website.
Thanks!
Oh Paula, what a shame that people can't just ask. How rude really. Here is a link to a website with coding you can use to disable right clicking. It does not prevent people from copy/pasting your whole page and then croping out the pics, but may slow them down. I guess the copyright text on the image only prevents people if they have a conscience !
Hi Paula! I had this happen to me a long time ago as well, though not for bears. I had a full version of this software:
http://www.softplatz.com/Soft/Web-Devel … ector.html
but don't have it anymore unfortunately. I seem to remember that it disabled the Save page, save image as, no screenshots, no Adobe Web capture etc. It didn't disable right clicking though, which can just be annoying when they're right clicking for another reason. It did however disable the save options in the right click menu. It's quite clever. It could also split your image into pieces so when they saved something all they would get was a small useless piece of your picture. Disabling the right clicking can be overcome by dragging the image to your desktop, so it's not very effective sometimes.
From memory you just paste the code it generates into your site code. This trial version will let you open it 30 times before you need to pay for it. Might be worth a look!
There's ALWAYS a way around image protection, but most people don't know how.
Hope it helps!
Thanks for the help both of you! I'll definitely look into your suggestions and see if I can figure it out x
Sorry for what has happened to you Paula but I haven't yet found any way of stopping people being able to get pictures from websites. Lisa from Ozmatilda bears thought her pictures were safe but I made copies of them and emailed them to her to prove that it's dead simple to get pictures even when 'so called' protected.
I'd love to know if anyone does find a way of doing it but so far I've not seen or heard of any thing to help.
Good luck.
Hugs Jane.
Wouldn't a trade name, in a light opacity and centered on the image, help?
Saying something like:
Owned by
RKR4CDS©
2007
The bears can still be clearly seen but there's no way the Copyright note can be eliminated or ignored.
I think a trade name is definitely a good idea ... I just don't like the idea of having to plough through all my images as there are so many! It's certainly something I may work with in future, if I can't find a way to stop the copying. Thanks for the suggestion Bobbie.
Paula that program I linked to will put watermarks on for you - I downloaded it and had a quick look through it last night. Would save you having to do it to every one!
Paula,
It is so easy to get around the "right click disable" that I think watermarking them would be a much better idea. That way if someone had the nerve to use one of your photos on ebay, you could have them shut down for stealing your pictures (I think)
hugs,
Brenda
Sounds as though watermarking is the way forward! Thanks everyone ... I'll make some time and get myself organised!
