Hi everyone, my brother and sister in law are expecting their first baby in november and I'd like to make a bear for her (yes it's a little girl).  I have made bears for babies before using safety joints, safety eyes, the right filling etc, but I thought I'd like to maybe try a jointless bear this time.  But after years of making jointed bears not sure where to start.  Have any of you designed patterns without joints?  Any tips MUCH appreciated

Hi, Catherine,  I have no special pattern for a jointless bear, but I've made a couple of childproof bears with a bear cub pattern I made.  The bears hold up well.  Instead of putting in the joints I sewed on the head with a triple seam where the circumference of the joint would be (from inside the bear) using Mastex thread from Intercal. I sewed on the arms and the legs from inside the bear with a triple seam.  With those, the seam went around the circumference of what would be the top half of a joint and then finished in what would be the diameter of the joint, effectively a "D" shape.  I embroidered the eyes and the nose, so nothing was hard, and then I stuffed them with a plush filling.  The finished bear is safe and soft as a pillow.  When you squeeze the bears sides the arms dance outwardly.   This may not be what you are hoping for, but it makes a great gift and I have two happy nieces now.

Catherine, here is a link to a free pattern for a jointless bear.  It is very basic but might give you an idea to create a pattern.  Good luck !

thanks everyone, Ellen I sent you an email,  Charlotte great tips - I presume you therefore make the bear as you usually would and then sew it strongly on, is the head not really wobbly then?  Thanks for sending me to that pattern Tammy, could be a good start for a pattern
