Oh dear, a terrible thing has happened, I bought my hubby a balloon trip with well known company for xmas, it has been his life long dream and as he turned 40 this year. I am so bad at keeping secrets I had to tell someone, so I told my daughter.

About 3 hours after telling her, when hubs was out of ear shot I said "what do you think....."
the reply was "Its going to be great, I can't wait....." Ugh!! "No Its for your dad not us"

30 minutes later her sobs subsided..........................oh do I feel bad, she had assumed, as we do most things together, we would all be going. She was great about it and genuinely wants her dad to enjoy it, which made me feel even worse. I realised through the guilt that I had a great kid (16 yrs old) no tantrums, shouts or anything just racking sobs followed by "don't worry mum its ok, I don't mind really bear_cry "

the guilt though is unbearable bear_cry

Oh dear Sue,

first, you raised a great girl....do not feel guilty.  Its OK for us all to not get everything we want.  It makes us stronger and more resilient.  My bet is that, at 16 you know this is true, part of her problem was hormonal as well.  Since she is such a neat kid she will adapt and adjust and if she's even half the lady you think she is, she will enjoy dad's excitement....

   Bravo on coming up with such a neat thing.....my honey is only getting an arc welder, and all the parts and pieces that go with it.....and he had t oresearch it and pick out exactly what he needed.....poor baby, its really for me, as I want some really neat arbors we saw last summer, and He's going to make them! .....never-the-less he loves tools and has wanted one for years.

And I am sure you got her something special as well....don't let the streess get to you, or you wont enjoy your holiday...

It'll all come out in the wash

gollyhugs

Sue, is there any way you can change it and make it a balloon trip for all of you or even for your daughter and here father? I am sure your husband will enjoy it but he would likely enjoy it even more if he had you and/or your daughter with him. My husband got me a balloon trip for Christmas one year so I am speaking from my experience. There are different sizes of baskets on balloons so they hold varying numbers of people. When I went most  of the balloons were carrying groups of people so it was like individual "parties". The balloon I was put on had a small group (who stuck to themselves and weren't at all friendly) and then just me, so I really felt alone (in fact being alone would have been better!) - if there would have been some other "singles" on then it would have been better or if I had had someone with me so that I wasn't all on my own to enjoy it. It was really exciting and I loved the trip but at the same time I found it very lonely and sad not to have someone to share my excitement with - especially seeing the group on with me and not being part of their excitement.

I agree with Edie on this one, is there anyway you might be able to wrangle a second ticket for your daughter?  I can remember when we were first together, hubby would talk about going to a fine restaurant all by his lonesome.  He said he stopped after awhile, because although the food was stellar, there was no one to share it with.  It was the companionship and the memories shared that made the experience worthwhile.

Dilu, yes I have raised a wonderful young lady and for the way she has behaved over it, I treated her to her first steiff (the catalogue bear) for an extra for xmas. crossed fingers it arrives in time. Don't be too hard on yourself an arc welder is most mans dreams (I did that one a few years ago, although he has not really used it yet  ) but trust me I am sure he loves you for it.

Edie, its a great idea and I did think of it for a few minutes but it was £143 which I know was a special offer with a gift pack included (binocs, dvd etc), the trouble is I know hubby would only worry that Catherine would have a fit on the trip (she has epilepsy)and thus would not fully enjoy it himself, you see since she was little, hubby has been a big baby were that was concerned and it would mean I would have to go as well (3 x £143??? heck). I did say that if she wanted to do that instead of a party for her 18th then I would do it for her.

Having just read yours Debbie, the actual trip is not booked yet as they only fly from April to September (its a gift ticket for a future flight), so I may contact the company at the time we book it to see if they would offer a discount on a second ticket, I think that it is a really good point over the memories shared thing.
PS I hate heights
